Hi everyone. Just wanted to share have finally seen endo today about gp wanting to reduce my levo from TSH result only. He has agreed with me to stay on 125mcg of levo He agreed with me that you cannot measure on TSH alone He said he had done lots of research and tried with GP,s not to do this but it hasn’t helped. He says as long as TSH is not below 0.02, so it’s not near undetectable it’s fine and can be managed well. He said to monitor symptoms rather than TSH. I asked him why we need it and he says because it measures the amount of thyroxine you have in your blood He said he could tell by just looking at the part of my face showing over the mask that I was hypo. I had to pay to see him but it was worth it. He is now going to follow me up at the hospital and carry out more blood tests and do a dexa scan and heart monitor

If it wasn’t for you guys on this site with all your help, information and support I wouldn’t have even questioned my GP and would now be on 75mcg and feeling really ill and not knowing why

Thankyou so much and hears to good thyroid health for us all

I asked him why we need it and he says because it measures the amount of thyroxine you have in your blood

But, it doesn't. Not with any accuracy. You need and FT4 for that. And, even that's not enough, because neither of those tests will tell you how much T3 you have. So, I wouldn't have been impressed with that response.

Hello grey goose. Sorry I explained that wrong. He said the TSH level in your blood shows how much T4 your pituitary gland is asking your thyroid gland to make.

It doesn't do that, either. It just indicates that it is disatisfied when the TSH is high, and when the TSH is low, you know it's satisfied. But, it's not in the least precise. Not precise enough to dose by.

I’ve probably misinterpreted him because he is very knowledgeable and has done lots of research and he agrees you cannot measure by TSH which is a good start

Well, that's good, anyway. :)

What issues If any are you having? Dexa scan is a quick way to have meds reduced I learnt this the hard way.

Hello. I am having all hypo symptoms. Weight gain. Mood swings. Anxiety. Palpitations. Constipation. Muscle and joint stiffness. Hair loss. He is carrying out a dexa scan because I have never had one and the GPs rationale for reducing my thyroxine was osteoporosis and heart disease. My endo just making sure

Lets hope they don't change any minds on treatment when they see the levels of T3, T4 , dexa scan and heart rate and rhythm . If you really have a helpful Endocrinologist that will be brilliant.

Hi Wilky, your post is really interesting! I'd love to know what he saw in your face that he could tell you have a thyroid condition even with a mask on! My doctors are just not interested.

I know I wish I had asked him. Probably puffy eyes and half of eyebrows missing I’m guessing

I would pass on the Endocrinologists name to TUK (if you didn't get the info from them) as we always need good, decent, informative, endocrinologists who treat the patient and not the resuts alone.

email Thyroiduk.org.uk for a list of Endocrinologists.

It is the head office of Thyroiduk and with an extremely small staff (about 4 I believe) who work in the background trying to change the attitudes of those who are supposed to be knowledgeable about all things thyroid and if you'd like to become a member, the more members we have the stronger we become.
