Cost of Liothyronine

Please could anyone tell me if the pricing has changed here. I was having tablets from the hospital (long story local GP won’t take over prescribing) but this time I was given capsules which I’ m not keen on. It seems like capsules have become cheaper than tablets? Thanks in advance.

Not necessarily cheaper

Many members find capsules don’t work as well…..or they need to take content out the capsule for best effect

What dose T3 are you taking

Do you split as 2,3 or 4 smaller doses through the day

Which brand of tablets were you taking

Current prices to NHS listed here

I’m taking split dose 10mcg per day, so 2x 5 mcg tablets/capsules. Tablets were Morningside, capsules are Roma.

The link is for Surrey.

I know link is for Surrey

But prices listed are current

Post is kept updated to show current prices

List is from Feb 1st 2025

NHS pay

Liothyronine tablets

28 x 20mcg = £69.58

28 x 10mcg = £152.44 (single supplier)

28 x 5mcg = £93.37

Liothyronine capsules

28 x 20mcg = £55

28 x 10mcg = £65

28 x 5mcg = £55

So as you were getting 5mcg x 2 that’s £186 per 28 days

2 x 5mcg capsules is £110 per 28 days

So capsules are £76 cheaper per prescription

Cheapest option by far is 20mcg tablets cut into 1/4’s

Equals £35 per 28 days

But many endocrinologist unhappy about cutting tablets unless taking whole 20mcg per day

I was on 20´s for 3 years and cut them which meant I didn’t have to travel to appointments every 3 months like I will have to now. I was on 5mcg tablets for a while, however this has now changed to capsules.

Hi, yes, they've swapped you due to price. The cost for 28 days of Roma capsules is £110, whereas 28 days of morning side cost £201.88If cost is there reason then I suggest you say you will accept 20mcg tablets and spit into 4.

28 days worth of this would only cost them £47.50. They can't argue with this and you get to stay on Morningside 🤞

Thank you.

Yes that’s what I thought. However my nhs endocrinologist said he cannot prescribe 20mcg (he had done for 3 years but was no longer allowed) I was not told at the hospital pharmacy that this was happening, they just said they had no tablets when I queried the capsules. I’m not sure I can do anything about it if they are only allowed to supply Roma.

Try them

If you find they aren’t as strong

Try them without the capsule coating

If still no good ….then kick up a fuss and get Morningside back

Other members have done this and got tablets back

I tried that but endo can’t said he can’t. Something must have changed above him and the pharmacy. It isn’t my local hospital I travel a long way.

I am using the capsules now. I struggle swallowing them and opening them is tricky at 6 am. I don’t get much sleep at night, tablets are easier.
