Think I may be lacking a vitamin/vitamins

Longinthetooth profile image

Hi all

My mood has dropped & I wonder if I might be low in a vitamin. Generally I'm happy. Thinking back, I'm slightly headachy. My GP will be a waste of time. Can anyone recommend a good private blood testing site. Plus, if I do require a supplement will my GP agree to prescribing me? Any help please.

You haven’t posted for quite a while

How much levothyroxine are you taking

Which brand are you using

Do you always get same brand levothyroxine at each prescription

Are you currently taking any vitamin supplements

Get FULL thyroid and vitamin testing before looking at adding anything

What is reason for your hypothyroidism

Autoimmune?

Recommended that all thyroid blood tests early morning, ideally just before 9am, only drink water between waking and test and last dose levothyroxine 24 hours before test

This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip)

Are you currently taking any T3?

T3 ….day before test split T3 as 2 or 3 smaller doses spread through the day, with last dose approximately 8-12 hours before test

Private tests are available as NHS currently rarely tests Ft3 or all relevant vitamins

Post all about what time of day to test

Medichecks and BH also offer private blood draw at clinic near you, or private nurse to your own home…..for an extra fee

Only do private testing early Monday or Tuesday morning.

If you normally take levothyroxine at bedtime/in night ...adjust timings as follows prior to blood test

If testing Monday morning, delay Saturday evening dose levothyroxine until Sunday morning. Delay Sunday evening dose levothyroxine until after blood test on Monday morning. Take Monday evening dose levothyroxine as per normal

HiThanks for replying.

I'm on Eltroxin, 100mcg. Yes, always Eltroxin. I recently tried T3 but it didn't agree. I'm not taking any vitamin supplements. I tried Feraglobin last year but it messed up my thyroxine. I have to be so careful as to what I take. I have secondary hypothyroidism. I had a benign, pea-sized tumour on my pituitary some years ago. I have actually made an appointment this afternoon at the docs hoping that they will test a bit further. If not, as I suspect, I will use one of your recommended sites.

Hope you keep well.

so with secondary hypothyroid GP MUST test TSH, Ft4 and Ft3

Important to take iron supplements at least 4 hours away from levothyroxine

Levothyroxine is an extremely fussy hormone and should always be taken on an empty stomach and then nothing apart from water for at least an hour after

Many people take Levothyroxine soon after waking, but it may be more convenient and perhaps more effective taken at bedtime

No other medication or supplements at same as Levothyroxine, leave at least 2 hour gap.

Some like iron, calcium, magnesium, HRT, omeprazole or vitamin D should be four hours away

(Time gap doesn't apply to Vitamin D mouth spray)

If you normally take levothyroxine at bedtime/in night ...adjust timings as follows prior to blood test

If testing Monday morning, delay Saturday evening dose levothyroxine until Sunday morning. Delay Sunday evening dose levothyroxine until after blood test on Monday morning. Take Monday evening dose levothyroxine as per normal

Thanks. By the way, I never take anything with the levothyroxine (a.m. on waking) The only other med I take is tetracycline mid afternoon.

Anyway, thanks for all your advice.

Sounded like you might have been taking Feraglobin with levothyroxine
