T3 medication prescription

I was given a prescription for T3 medication after seeing a private endocrinologist. I was thankful to have had the appointment and the prescription but as it is very costly, (£250 for the appointment and around £100 for the medication) I am wondering if it is possible for me to buy the medication from a pharmacy without the prescription? I have seen T3 advertised online but I am wary of buying it from an unknown source. I get my T4 from my GP monthly and I reckon I need a new batch of T3 every 3 months. GP has refused to prescribe me T3. Any thoughts?

Which brand and dose size of T3 has been written on your presciption?

Could you get your Endo to rewrite it for Thybon Henning 20mcgs & cut the tablets with a pill cutter to the correct size?

Cost for Thybon Henning is around 60-70p per 20mcg tablet.

Also, be wary of anyone messaging you with a source for T3. Do check with admin before purchasing.

⚠️ IMPORTANT! When you receive a message with a recommendation, please do not assume it is genuine!

Scammers are joining the forum on a very regular basis and messaging members with their assertions that they have successfully purchased xyz medication from zyx source.

Once you have what you think may be a genuine recommendation, you are strongly encouraged to message an Admin to ask whether the admin team have any feedback on the source you've been given.

⚠️ Don't part with your much needed money until you are as sure as you can be that the source is genuine.

I got the T3 direct from the pharmacy he uses. They came in a brown bottle and I don't see a brand on there. All is says is "Lactose free Liothyronine T3 20mgs take half twice a day ". I an actually taking a quarter of a tablet twice a day as I went hyper. I could ask him about the other medication you mention and see what he says. Thanks so much for your helpful advice. I am always very sceptical about supplements or medication from unknown sources.

The pharmacy should have given you a patient information leaflet.

Perhaps in future phone around pharmacies to get quotes for how much it will cost.

Do the tablets not have markings on them?

It is usually straightforward enough to identify the product from a combination of description (colour, size, active ingredient) and markings.

They are proud white tables with a line running through the middle. It say 1 on one side and B on the other. I think I'll ring the pharmacy who sent them and ask them for more information. I can't recall receiving a patient information leaflet but my memory is not great at the moment so can't swear to it. Thanks for those links. Very helpful.

Effect

How does the ingredient of the drug work?

The active ingredient is a synthetically produced thyroid hormone. In the healthy thyroid gland in the human organism, two hormones important for the metabolism are produced. One is called levothyroxine or T4 and represents a certain depot. If necessary, it becomes the other, the actual effective form, the so-called. Liothyronine or T3.

The thyroid hormones are crucial for a functioning metabolism of the human organism. If they are not produced by the body in sufficient quantities themselves, they must be fed regularly. The medicine only takes the actual effective form, the liothyronine.

There are several people on this site Using T3 some just T3. Tiromel is made in Turkey.

You would have to repost asking for Private Message Only.

I am prescribed T3 Cynomel here in France but sometimes need a top up and I buy Tiromel online.

So your T3 is Thybon Henning

How many tablets did you get for £100

Roseway Labs on this list below supply many members on private prescription

Cost is usually £60-£70 per 100 tablets

thyroiduk.org/get-support/t...

Others on list may also supply at similar or possibly cheaper price

Thybon Henning is manufactured in Germany and is excellent quality and guaranteed supply

Unlike buying non prescription online via dubious unknown sources

I got 100 tabs

SlowDragonAmbassador in reply toCitta

So shop around for best price for Thybon at next prescription

As you are currently only taking 10mcg per day 100 tablets will last long time

It will. Thank you. I’d be happy to them at a lower price. It means I can continue with them going forward.

I’m surprised your tablets came in a bottle. I take Thybon Henning and the 20mcg tablets come in a blister pack complete with PIL (patient information leaflet) which is a legal requirement. I am mystified as to why, if your tablets are Thybon Henning manufactured by Sanofi, they would be removed from the blister pack to put in a bottle.

I'm so confused about it. I got them from Springfield Pharmacy in Richmond UK. That was the pharmacy my Endo said I should use. I think I need a new Endo.

Did he give you a prescription on paper for the medication and specify the brand on it? If so you can take it to any pharmacy that will supply Thybon Henning to a private prescription. Many of us use Roseway Labs in London. Great service. Helpful, fast, cost effective. They supply the medication in normal blister packs in boxes with the patient information leaflets. I'm no saying there's something wrong with your medication, far from it, but it's an odd way o pack it.

You say you are foggy thinking at the moment. Did you start the T3 on a quarter tablet a day for a while and then increase to the half a tablet? If not, you might need to try the smaller dose for a while to see if the fog clears or gets worse. For me, any T3 in excess (for my body) makes me even more tired, exhausted, and full of symptoms. I think it's worse than too little hormone. So be careful. These ends who do write scripts for T3 are very gung-ho! with it. They start people on 10mcg a day often, having first slashed the patient's Levo prescription and then tell the patient to increase to 20mcg of T3 a day very quickly. For my body that has been like a bull in a china shop approach. It won't do. Just because the tablet comes in 20mcg doesn't mean we all need that much.

So for your next repeat prescription from this endo, ask for 100 tablets and for the prescription to specify Thybon Henning. And make sure you can get the prescription in the post so that you can buy from Roseway Labs (for example). If he won't do that, you need a new endo or you could use Roseway's own prescribing pharmacist for the prescription. She's very kind, you speak on the phone and she prescribes. Cost is significantly less, but she's not going to help you with anything other than the thyroid meds. If you want other things monitoring at the same time, you need an endo.

He started me on 20mcgs T3 split does and I haven't felt great since. Depressed and tired. He also reduced my T4 to 75 mcgs from 100. My last blood test showed I am now hyper. T3 nd T 4 normal but TSH not. So, I am taking a quarter of a T3 tablet twice a day and I reduced my T4 to 50 mcgs. I will retest my blood in 8 weeks. My GP is very unsympathetic and I can't get another Endo appointment until April. I do my bloods with Medichecks and I find them good as they give an explanation of my blood results that makes sense to me. I have been gluten free now for three months as well.

FancyPants54 profile image
FancyPants54 in reply toCitta

This is quick as I have to leave for an appointment. But you are not hyper just because your TSH is low. A mistake so many doctors make. If your FT3 and FT4 are within range you are not hyper.

Please don't drop your T4 that far! That's a really bad idea. He started you too high on the T3. So many endocrinologists do that. If I were you I would start again. Go back to your original Levo dose. And take 1/4 tablet of T3 once a day. Hold that for several weeks and see how you feel.

Dropping T4 too low will make you feel awful. It does me anyway.

Must dash. But you need to do a bit of a reversal here, in my opinion.
