Looking to get T3 in Uk but doc won’t even test for it

When back in the states I took a full thyroid panel after being cared for by NHS garden-variety treatment of T4 only the past 3 years.

As I suspected my levels were way off. T3 was off the chart low and TSH was in the mid 2.5 range, I feel better when I’m .8 - 1.0 higher range.

My doc prescribed Tirosent .88 and .10 of T3 which was too much. I’ve only been able to tolerate .5 of T3 every few days. Any one care to comment?

Dont recall my T4 levels and no, vitamin levels were not checked.

It’s time for me to get new meds, but I’ll have to source and test here in Belfast. Any suggestions? GP is less than helpful.

I think we need some clarification here!

.5 of T3

I rather assume you mean 5 micrograms of T3? (Which could be written as 0.005 milligrams but that always seems confusing.) Not 0.5 micrograms which would be incredibly low.

Few people find taking T3 inconsistently is a good plan. Most take the same, or very close, every day.

My experience is that GPs can't test for FT3 levels - the lab ignores it if it's requested - and can't initiate liothyronine. Can you get a referral to an endocrinologist? Thyroid UK has a list of ones that people have found to be helpful.

Hi BossaNovaBabe , I am also NI based and probably the same health trust area as you (SE). I asked my GP this year about a trial of combo T3/T4. They said they couldn't issue it themselves but did refer me to a consultant who has started me on combo therapy and will continue to look after me rather than GP, for now, at least.I would ask your GP to refer you on as you have been prescribed a combination the US and want to continue that.

I only had to wait about 6 weeks for the 1st appointment.
