Recently been given Vencamil by my Chemist at Asda. My experience with the medication is that itis not as effective as Levothroxine which I have used for 20 yearsI use 125 micrograms and after 2 weeks using Vencamil my symptoms have deteriorated

I have yet to see if my blood tests have been affected

I personally would not recommend Vencamil

Hi Wedds,

Welcome to the forum! 🙂

Are you aware that Vencamil is also levothyroxine? Which brand of levothyroxine do you usually take?

Do you have any recent blood tests to post so others can comment on them for you?

There's lots of knowledge and helpful members on the forum if you have any questions to ask.

Many, many members find Vencamil is the best brand as is lactose free and mannitol free

However we are all different

125mcg is not a very high dose for a bloke

Perhaps you need dose adjustment?

How long have you been on this dose

Which brand were you taking previously

Approximately how much do you weigh in kilo

Retest thyroid levels 6-8 weeks after any dose change or brand change

Recommended that all thyroid blood tests early morning, ideally just before 9am, only drink water between waking and test and last dose levothyroxine 24 hours before test

This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip)

Private tests are available as NHS currently rarely tests Ft3 or all relevant vitamins

Only do private testing early Monday or Tuesday morning.

If you normally take levothyroxine at bedtime/in night ...adjust timings as follows prior to blood test

If testing Monday morning, delay Saturday evening dose levothyroxine until Sunday morning. Delay Sunday evening dose levothyroxine until after blood test on Monday morning. Take Monday evening dose levothyroxine as per normal

Guidelines of dose Levo by weight

approx how much do you weigh in kilo

Even if we frequently start on only 50mcg, most people need to increase levothyroxine dose slowly upwards in 25mcg steps (retesting 6-8 weeks after each increase) until eventually on, or somewhere near full replacement dose (typically 1.6mcg levothyroxine per kilo of your weight per day)

cks.nice.org.uk/topics/hypo...

bnf.nice.org.uk/drugs/levot...

nhs.uk/medicines/levothyrox...

Adults usually start with a dose between 50 micrograms and 100 micrograms taken once a day. This may be increased gradually over a few weeks to between 100 micrograms and 200 micrograms taken once a day.

Some people need a bit less than guidelines, some a bit more

TSH should be under 2 as an absolute maximum when on levothyroxine

If symptoms of hypothyroidism persist despite normalisation of TSH, the dose of levothyroxine can be titrated further to place the TSH in the lower part of the reference range or even slightly below (i.e., TSH: 0.1–2.0 mU/L), but avoiding TSH < 0.1 mU/L. Use of alternate day dosing of different levothyroxine strengths may be needed to achieve this (e.g., 100 mcg for 4 days; 125 mcg for 3 days weekly).

sciencedirect.com/science/a...

The optimal daily dose in overt hypothyroidism is 1·5–1·8 μg per kg of bodyweight, rounded to the nearest 25 μg.

Wedds, Vencamil is levothyroxine. It is a relatively new brand of levothyroxine. Lots of people really like it, but there will always be some for whom a particular brand doesn't suit.

Presumably you are prescribed a 100mcg tablet, plus a 25mcg tablet to get your 125mcg dose? What brands of levothyroxine do you usually get given for these?

Not what you're looking for?
