I'm suspecting I have one (or more) of the above, I know they're common when hypo.
Can anyone advise on how to test and treat, please?
I was inclined to follow the advice in William Davis' Supergut book but he relies heavily on the AIRE2 device and I read a negative review which spooked me a bit (and the device is a significant cost if found not to work). As always, would be very grateful for any advice. Thank you

GP can do H pylori or there’s a cassette type test (like covid testing) you can buy but I’ve no idea how good they are.
After reading Izabella Wentz I ticked all the boxes of symptoms, so treated myself with S. Boulardii, black seed oil, auto immune diet for 6 weeks (twice) then did the Zoe poo test and found I have few ‘bad’ gut bacteria so assume my recurring trouble is histamine/fodmap.
Thanks Regenallotment - it's a fascinating read isn't it? Are you making yoghurt? I'm tempted to try and find a yoghurt maker in the black friday deals...
Think I need to reread Izabella Wentz' bit about gut health (I've recently been working through the Adrenal book but that just refers back to the Hashimoto's book for gut health). I actually did the auto immune diet for four weeks this time - previously it just seemed too daunting, but actually this time I didn't find it too bad at all, except that it'd help if I was more enthused about tinned coconut milk - and it did help so I think I'll restart that, although maybe try adding back some pulses earlier. I've relaxed a little, not too far I don't think but it's had an effect.
I'm sorry to hear that you have recurring issues and hope they're soon sorted.
I did do the yoghurt thing, I bought the Bio Gaia tablets online as per his instructions crushed them up and started some off, it was a really long time ago now, I found Grapetree stock Pura organic coconut milk tins, were the only ones I found that don’t contain carboxymethylcellulose emulsifier that can irritate the gut. After the first batch it was a bit runny but kept going and eventually a few batches in I got (saving a little from the previous batch to go again) something resembling thicker gloop.
My yoghurt maker is a Wilko bird food bucket packed with Jiffy bags 🤣
I’d be careful with a heated one because it seems to ‘go’ faster than regular yoghurt making. My Mum made something very cheesy and unappealing when she tried with her proper machine. I just warm the coconut milk to finger warm and pour into a kilner jar with a tablespoon of the last batch.
I must confess I killed my yoghurt recently, left it too long and it had a yellow crust after being away for a few days so it went down the sink. Have fun!
I have found Oregano oil effective for SIBO & a fermenting gut. I can tell when it’s worked as flatulance disappears. You can’t take it for more than a couple of weeks though as it will kill good bacteria too. Cycle on & off using a good prebiotic in between. I buy from Amazon. I’ll send through a photo.
H. Pylori was diagnosed in my husband. High strength manuka honey killed it. Make sure you’re buying a certified honey though as it is often faked. Holland & Barrett have good brands & often good price offers if you subscribe to their emails. It’s expensive stuff but effective. Buy the strongest you can afford. Small pot first to check that you tolerate it. You might feel flu like when it starts working. This is the effect of the bacteria dying.
If you can tolerate it a spoonful of cider vinegar, especially unfiltered, diluted in water can be very useful too.
I wouldn’t worry about testing. Try these remedies & cut out as much sugar as you can from your diet. That means avoiding fruit, bread, pastries, sweetened chocolate etc. Eat live unsweetened yoghurt, raw carrot & unsweetened kombucha . Maybe drop cows’ milk too & use a nut milk, buy carefully as some have additives. Plenish is a good brand. No sweetened fizzy drinks or alcohol.
Be very careful about artificial sweeteners , many disrupt the biome in your stomach. Try to avoid. Eat green leafy veg & salads as often as you can. Try a very restricted diet for 2 weeks alongside the honey & oil capsules etc & see if symtoms improve. What symptoms do you have?
Thanks Bertwills that's really helpful. Working by symptoms seems to make a lot more sense than spending out on testing that's trying to prove something isn't there (which is always tricky!)
I have some "could be many things" symptoms, brain fog, sweats, joint pains, sometimes constipation... I need a much higher dose of levo than the expected dose for my weight so don't seem to be absorbing too well. Sugar cravings, reflux (resolved on NDT but returned now I'm Levo only) The main one that seems directly gut-related is a tendency to burp after meals (nice!) which resolved on the 4 week diet (see below) but is back now, although I've not relaxed all that much; oh, edit to add, urgency and sometimes passing mucus.
I'm already pretty careful about what I eat, and did 4 weeks of Izabella Wentz' Adrenal Transformation diet which felt pretty good but restrictive. Then I went on holiday and ate a few gluten-free pasties and some other stuff not allowed on the ATP foods list; not going mad but not reintroducing foods systematically. I got really gassy! So there seems to be something going on there but I'm not sure what.
Is there a way to distinguish between symptoms of h.pylori, SIBO, SIFO? I'm not really getting any bloating or pain, just the burping, but that seems to indicate something is amiss.
Hi, the burping especially after sweet or carb heavy foods suggests fermentation in the gut. The oregano oil settles that for me very quickly. More likely to be SIBO type problem than H pylori I think. Most likely is Candida. Yeasts increase that so eating anything fermented or mushrooms, for example can increase that. Acid in the stomach should kill the fermentation but hypos tend to have low stomach acid. The cider vinegar, if you can tolerate, will do the job well. Candida is extremely difficult to completely eradicate, it’s a case of minimising it’s effects. Caprylic acid is a supplement you could try against the Candida but try the oregano oil first as I think it’s better. Candida causes many symptoms & there are many articles & supplements so it’s easy to go down a rabbit hole reading about it.
Magnesium citrate is excellent to cope with slow digestion & constipation. The longer the food stays in your system the more yeasts can grow so regularity is really important. If urgency is more of a problem & your thyroid hormone treatment is at the correct level not over medicated, then try big doses of S Boulardii probiotics.
