Hello I’m having a bout of indigestion I have read the antacid leaflet I didn’t realise to leave 4 hours between taking levothyroxine as it interferes with the absorption, just want others to be aware

The antacids may make you worse over time, it’s common with hypothyroidism to have low stomach acid that causes reflux, GERD etc. low FT3 can cause this, Dr Eric Balcavage on the US podcast Thyroid Answers talks about it. Often folks are treated incorrectly (according to my local ENT specialist) with antacids which then affects the absorption and makes them even more hypo. I’d ask the GP for a referral to ENT or Gastro and ask of your FT3 could be linked. (Or test privately and prove it to them).

We digest food using the acid in our stomach. I have never understood the cure for indigestion being antacids to reduce the acid. In fact I can now spot a man on antacids from a distance just by observing his distended belly!

Strongly recommend you get FULL thyroid and vitamin testing done

Quite likely ready for an increase in Levo or low vitamin levels

Recommended that all thyroid blood tests early morning, ideally just before 9am, only drink water between waking and test and last dose levothyroxine 24 hours before test

This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip)

How long have you been on antacids

Is this a PPI prescription from GP

Start taking antacid as far away as possible from Levo

You can take Levo at bedtime …..often more effective. Certainly more convenient

Low stomach acid can be a common hypothyroid issue
