I’m wondering if any of you who has Hashimotos or graves have also had the thyroid storm that causes you to go from hyper to hypo and back again. If so, how long does either side last for you? How many times a month or how many times a year etc? i’ve already been diagnosed with Hashimoto’s back in the 90s and this would be my first time going to the hyper side.

Do you mean an actual Thyroid Storm? The life threatening hospitalising Thyrotoxic Crisis, or do you mean what I’ve seen here described as a Hashi Swing? Where you have days to weeks to months of symptoms of over replacement (if taking thyroid hormone replacement).
I’ve only had the latter and learned they can be avoided to some extent with regular testing and attention to symptoms. Or when a swing occurs they can be well managed with reductions in dose and close monitoring.
Thank you for your input. Here are some other specifics you asked for. My T4 has been very level at approximately 1.5. (0.9-1.7). My TSH has swung wildly over the course of the last year. Its current number is 0.3 (0.3-4.3). in June it was 9.0 - yes I don’t change brands of my levo at 150 & and my Lio at 5 MCG. This time my T3 was not tested yet and many of my hypothalamus processes have been tested and are normal levels.
My supplements are Calcium citrate with magnesium glycolate at night. In the morning with breakfast, I have krill oil(for the omegas), ubiquitous(CoQ10), multivitamin, 5000 IU, vitamin D & probiotics. My medication’s and vitamins have not changed in a long time. Too many medication’s to list.
When I say thyroid storm, I mean, the major swing of the feelings (& blood values)of overactive thyroid. I’ve had Hashimoto’s since the mid 90s and always and hypothyroidism. Now it seems I’m getting the hyperthyroidism & experience many of the hyperthyroid effects. I am waiting for more test results. I have several other autoimmune disorders and I’m wondering if there is a large crossover between them all.
ESSENTIAL To test FT4 and Ft3 especially when taking T3
That’s a very small dose of T3. Enough to significantly lower TSH, but might not be offering much Ft3
Recommended that all thyroid blood tests early morning, ideally just before 9am, only drink water between waking and test and last dose levothyroxine 24 hours before test
This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip)
T3 ….day before test split T3 as 2 or 3 smaller doses spread through the day, with last dose approximately 8-12 hours before test
You need vitamin D, folate, B12 and ferritin levels tested at least annually
Are you on gluten free and/or dairy free diet or tried either
multivitamin never recommended on here….Most contain iodine
You say taking other meds
Levothyroxine is an extremely fussy hormone and should always be taken on an empty stomach and then nothing apart from water for at least an hour after
No other medication or supplements at same as Levothyroxine, leave at least 2 hour gap.
Some like iron, calcium, magnesium, HRT, omeprazole or vitamin D should be four hours away
(Time gap doesn't apply to Vitamin D mouth spray)
Many people take Levothyroxine soon after waking, but it may be more convenient and perhaps more effective taken at bedtime
If you normally take levothyroxine at bedtime/in night ...adjust timings as follows prior to blood test
If testing Monday morning, delay Saturday evening dose levothyroxine until Sunday morning. Delay Sunday evening dose levothyroxine until after blood test on Monday morning. Take Monday evening dose levothyroxine as per normal
As others have said I believe you are confusing thyroid swing with storm - too very different events. Thyroid swings, described on this forum well, are also very well described in the book Thyroid for Dummies and many others I suspect.
I have been having 1 sometimes 2 thyroid swings a year for a few years now as my thyroid problem got worse. I knew this as my sleep disorder (that I know I have) became temporarily far worse during the hyper part of the swing as a result of muscle weakness across my body. The muscle weakness was mild ( I found it difficult to play tennis for example) but trashed my sleep horribly. I got them for 3 weeks typically, sometimes longer.
My last swing fully was February upon which I gave up gluten fully and strictly. I have to say so far so good I feel a lot better but I have also pretty much nailed my sleep therapy this year so all in I am much healthier. I am hoping to end the year without another attack and attack / hyper swing..., fingers crossed.
