Hi, sorry for posting again, I couldn’t find anything relating to this in the search. How long does a hypo hyper swing last? when I have them it can vary between an hour and longer

What are the symptoms for you? How do you know it’s a swing between the two?

I don’t know if it is but when I get one I get Palpitations, anxiety, heat intolerance, fatigue. My recent private bloods showed high thyroglobulin AB 194 (13-150) TSH 0.02 (0.27-4.2) free T3 5.0 (3.1-6.8) free T4 26.2 (12-22). GP has lowered levo from 125 to 100 2 weeks ago and the daily palpitations and anxiety have stopped. He’s referred me to Endo and I’m having coeliac test on Monday.

Maybe it’s not a swing but just flare up of your hashimoto? If you are feeling better on lower dose maybe you were over medicated?

I think most people mean the same thing by ' swing' and 'Flare of hashimoto's' , but frankly, they are such 'wooly' terms they could mean anything.

In my (limited ) opinion.....it must be longer than hours . I think you are talking days or maybe weeks if not months , since (in theory), the mechanism is the destruction of a bit of thyroid gland , and the subsequent 'dumping' of the hormones contained in that bit into the bloodstream. If it's mostly T4 , then it has a half life of 7+ days, i suppose the T3 would have a quicker effect.

But that's theory...... i don't know if there is any research on how long the 'dumping 'part lasts each time, but i'd think it's a slow cellular process, rather than 'emptying a bucket'.

If anyone has any research on this i'd be very interested too.

But i wouldn't be surprised if there is none , since it must be hard to catch it in the act using Blood tests, and scans of the thyroid to see it's activity are not done often/at all.

I use to have these. It’d happen mainly late morning. I never knew what was going on. I’d often be in work. I’d either get sent home or to A&E. they always sent me away saying there was nothing wrong. It would last maybe an hour, maybe longer. Then I’d be ok again. I’d be fine for a while then it would happen again. It would happen when walking my dogs that I’d also feel a bit faint but never actually fainted. Now I now that was any form of exercise related. I’d been on Levothyroxine for 11 years. Never fully understood it all. Just took my tablets each day like the GP prescribed. I now have Patient Access and have looked back at my thyroid results from over the years. You could do this too. In 11 years my thyroid bloods have never been optimal. They’ve either been too high or too low. No wonder, I now know, I’ve felt wrong all this time. My new private only Endocrinologist informed me that any TSH above 2.5 is hypo. Even though the NHS range is up to 5.50. They have the range set too wide. This is to avoid treating people until they are very hypo or hyper. This is all about budgets and not health. For the first time in 12 years my thyroid results are optimal and I feel brilliant. My friends and family can’t believe my transformation. All this down to getting the levels optimal. And that was achieved by introducing T3. The NHS is against T3 medication which is crazy. However, since I went private and had a successful trial on T3 the NHS finally caved in and now prescribe it to me. Only took 12 years!

I also had low cortisol. This is your adrenals. I now believe the highs could have been too much cortisol and then into lows as the cortisol dips too low after the high. Hope that makes sense. I’d also request a cortisol test or a synacthen test. In saying that though since adding T3 and reducing T4 my cortisol is now in a good position along with my thyroid results. So all along it was proven to be low T3 from poor conversion from blood tests and a positive DIO2 gene test.

I have these, can last 30 min to hour feeling dizzy, faint, then it passes and I feel tired. Do you think this is a hyper swing?
