BMJ - Mail apologies for accusing GP and nutritionist of spreading fake news about statins bmj.com/content/387/bmj.q2261
The publishers of the Mail on Sunday have apologised and agreed to pay substantial libel damages and costs to a GP and a nutritional scientist whom the paper accused of knowingly making false statements about statins.1
The settlement by Associated Newspapers followed a damning High Court judgment in June by Mr Justice Nicklin, the senior libel judge, after a trial on preliminary issues in the case.2 He ruled that the paper’s “takedown” of three commentators in March 2019—GP Malcolm Kendrick, Zoë Harcombe, a nutritional scientist with a PhD, and cardiologist Aseem Malhotra—was based on a …

Interesting that when they say
‘ apologies for accusing GP and nutritionist of spreading fake news about statins’
they appear to have forgotten to include Dr Aseem Malhotra” who is an eminent heart specialist. excellent book. A Statin Free Life and can definitely recommend it along with The Great Cholesterol Con. Well done to those doctors. I imagine the statin pushing ‘establishment’ won’t be too pleased.
Aseem Malhotra said on X that he didn't include himself in the action because it was just after his mother died. He said his evidence was used in the case.
I skimmed the legal summary of the case and as usual it's way more complex than is presented in the media. The full judgement is 255 pages long. Carter-Ruck do a 4 page summary. The judgement is about how Harcombe and Kendrick were treated as opposed to who was right in the statin debate. The case may well continue......

interesting article by Kenrick about the conspiracy against 'statin deniers'
Strange article in places but I think there probably was / is a conspiracy to crush Kendrick and co based on the fact if Kendrick and co are correct then it means that Sir Rory and co and their beliefs are wrong and they won’t want that. I’m sure it is a cut throat world out there.
I remember reading about Sir James Young Simpson, Scottish obstetrician who invented chloroform in the 1840's, experimented on himself and popularised its use during childbirth. Thus saving many women the pain and distress of giving birth.
He too was censored, rejected and rebuked by colleagues as well as the Church who believed pain in childbirth was due to the " sins of Eve". And shouldnt be reduced. However he cheerfully ignored them and finally won acceptance when Queen Victoria used chloroform in her 8th childbirth.
You often look at these pioneers who faced such overwhelming odds, took on the medical establishment, who were later proved absolutely right ( Florence Nightingale) and feel such a mixture of both admiration and exasperation. And wonder why the medical profession is so resistant to change and allowing a wide mix of opinions.
Well before germ theory was understood, Hungarian obstetrician Ignaz Semmelweis discovered the association between doctors disinfecting their hands and a reduction in postpartum infection, aka childbed fever, which was often fatal. Was he celebrated by his colleagues for this lifesaving discovery? Not exactly.
Thanks louelden for giving us more information on this. I could not help but compare it with the nonsense we have to submit ourselves to re: T3, low TSH, normal blood test results, AF, osteoporosis etc etc. Interestingly it’s a Professor who seems to be particularly highlighted in this mess. How do people get to be professors with those kind of ‘one track minds’? Maybe it’s a requirement? I can’t help but think of a few in endocrinology.
At least my mind is relieved again on my stance against taking statins.
I have now written to Dr Kendrick. I wish we had a ‘hero’ like him fighting for us.
Kendrick does give thyroid issues a shout out from time to time but it hasn't yet become his main focus - more in the context of general grumbling about patients being infantilised.
This is from a 2015 blog

I have read this very straightforward piece. This guy really does articulate well. I wrote to him immediately and got a very quick reply. He seems utterly humane. We need the likes of him in medicine. He says he is still interested in the way hypothyroidism is treated. I was very moved by his reply. Naturally he is a very busy man.
