“Jolly, as they say, good.” What a quote! I laughed and laughed out loud. Dr. Malcolm is a genius. I will print this out and take it to my doctor on next visit. I have a wonderful Dr. who does listen and does prescribe NDT, but he’s always collecting papers like this.

Thanks for reposting I hadn’t seen it before - oh my what a fantastic article! Facts and figures.... could it be? i really am sane after all! Not imagining after all!

The bit I laughed at was a quote from a medical colleague saying some of the thyroid patients might not be 'tightly wrapped'! Just the mental image of it!

Hi Paula6,

Thank you for the article. I enjoyed reading it. I also note that doctors are not to be paternalistic but instead "We are told that we must explore the patients’ expectations, listen to their worries and fears, and work with them in partnership to lead to a therapeutic partnership…. " This also sounds a bit paternalistic to me or, maybe, "maternalistic". The words "listen", "respect" and "think about" what the patient is saying may be more helpful to all of us.

That was very interesting, and something I've often thought about a doctor's role. They're being expected to do several contradictory things at once, and it sounds like no one has actually sat down and wondered if these things are realistic.

It means doctors are walking on eggshells, trying to keep to all these guidelines. And unsurprisingly.... They have no headspace left to listen to patients or engage their brain, and end up doing a crap job of it!

Agree SilverAvocado, much like teachers I’m afraid, bureaucracy 😩

Yea, I agree with you. I think the situation is very similar with doctors and teachers :(

There's some kind of fear there'll be a few incompetents, so everyone has to be forced into mediocrity, but with loads of standardisation :(

I had read this before as I do read Dr. Kendrick’s blog. I would certainly recommend his Doctoring Data book; fascinating and depressing. He has an entertaining writing style. I’m with him on the statin issue.

As one of those patients with a normal TSH who’s now feeling better on Levothyroxine, I’m eternally grateful for renegade doctors.

It has been posted before every now and then, but I'd forgotten most of it! The first half is a great summary of general thyroid issues, so if forwarded this to a few friends who need to learn about it :p
