Can I take NDT while on Levo

Hi, Could I take levo and NDT together?

I am on Levo (100mg) daily and have been for approximately 5 years - while I feel a little better I am really struggling with trying to get the extra weight off and I am convinced it is the levo causing it as I do masses amounts of exercise and eat very healthily. I have already seen a private nutrionist and Functional Medicine Practitioner and had lots of help and advice and have also had numerous genetic testing done so I understand what my body is doing. However despite all of this I am still struggling with the weight and I am sure some of it is menopausal although I am now post menopausal. I have never been overweight and always very tiny and petite so this extra weight is causing me to feel absolutely awful. I wondered if taking T3 in some form might help? I have also considered coming off of Levo but I am scared of the consequences. Any advice would be very much appreciated.

hi there,

What were your most recent thyroid blood test results?

FT4 and FT3 will likely indicate where you have room for an increase or alteration.

I haven’t used NDT, I found adding a little T3 worked wonders for me.

Weight and hypothyroidism is fast becoming my favourite thing to talk about 😬. I’ve learned so much along the journey. Here are some tidbits that resonate most for me.

- Following a ‘diet’ or calorie counting or fat avoiding won’t work.🥗 The metabolism slows to match the calorie restriction.

- Doing daily long cardio exercise won’t work 🏃‍♀️you get tired and hungry.

- optimising vitamins like D, B12, ferritin and folate helps

- learning how your body processes sugar helps, then you can make choices that suit you.

- Dr. Gabrielle Lyon has a book called Forever Strong, it’s great, it has 3 short resistance workouts that you can start with body weight once a week or once a fortnight. Moving up to 3 times a week with weights. She has done studies to show women and particularly menopausal women need 30g protein, 3 times a day. It’s quite hard to eat that much, it takes some doing.

- Yoga, Tai Chi, Pilates and walking.

- avoiding gluten and dairy helps some, was great for me.

But….. back to the top, getting your thyroid hormones optimal alongside all this is key. 🌱

Yes. My Consultant prescribes NDT and Levothyroxine for me.

I take NDT and some levo, and am fine on that.

Hello Yogibabs :

NDT is the full spectrum thyroid hormone replacement with each grain/tablet supporting you with trace elements of T1. T2 and calcitonin + a measured dose of T3 and T4 in each grain -so with a fixed ratio of T3/T4 that works well for many thousands of patients.

There are some who find the NDT either too strong or not strong enough - and need to also add in either synthetic T3 to increase the ratio - or add in T4 to decrease the ratio - to find their best dose.

I think it's likely cheaper and easier to purchase synthetic T3 - Liothyronine.

T3 is available on the NHS but we would need to see some current blood test results / ranges to help you further with this route to treatment.

No thyroid hormone replacement works well until the core strength vitamins and minerals are up and maintained at optimal levels - are you also supplementing and monitoring your ferritin, folate, B12 and vitamin D ?

I’ve never been able to get t3, my consultant prescribed me NDT alongside thyroxine - and now I source myself because it was getting so expensive. Id be interested to try t3 instead - does that have to be prescribed or are there ways of getting it? I’m in UK

I believe so - T3 is prescribed on the NHS - it's a bit of a post code lottery - but you can more easily source T3 than NDT - and its a lot cheaper -

beware scammers are approaching forum members - so do not enter into any transactions until after you have checked out any sources with Admin as being safe and reliable.

Best start your own post -

Thanks appreciate your help. Thats the issue - the scarcity of it. I definitely feel the benefits of taking NDT and thyroxine. Only ever taken NDT in combination with thyroxine if that helps yogibabs
