Hubby’s Results and some advice please

Hi

I am hypothyroid since 2009.

My hubby had routine bloods at GP in May showing FT4 slightly under and cholesterol as 6.5 but classed as normal. He has symptoms though, sluggish, always cold, has worn a fleece and shoes and socks most of our wonderful summer, forgetful. I persuaded him to have a Medickeck’s test. His results were.

TSH 4.68 (0.37 - 4.2)

FT3. 4.5 (3.1- 6.8)

FT4 13.6. (12 - 22)

I wonder if he should be hassling the GP for treatment. He’s otherwise a very healthy 76-year old.

Any advice will be much appreciated.

Well, his TSH is saying hypo, there. But he wouldn't get a diagnosis at that level because doctors like it to go over 10.

Is this his first thyroid test? Because that high result could be just a fluke as so many things can affect the TSH.

Did he also have his antibodies and nutrients tested?

suggest you retest in another 6 weeks including thyroid antibodies and very importantly vitamins too

Low vitamin levels very common as we get older

What vitamin supplements is he taking…..if any

Recommended that all thyroid blood tests early morning, ideally just before 9am, only drink water between waking and test

This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip)

Come back with new post in 6-8 weeks once he gets thyroid and vitamin levels tested

Stop any supplements that contain biotin 5-7 days before any test……eg vitamin B complex….as biotin can falsely affect test results
