Hi all,
Firstly thanks so much for your guidance and help, reading all of the posts has already helped me massively through this horrible disease.
My iron results have consistently worsened over the last 6 months, and hoping there's someone knowledgeable that can guide me please, as it seems you need to be a Wizard to peice together iron statistics.
Iron: 24.7umol/L (10-30)
TIBC: 41.7umol/L (45-81) *Under range
UIBC: 17.0 (12 - 42)
Transferrin Saturation: 59.2% (25-45) *Over range
Ferritin: 129ug (30-518)
I'm especially concerned with the very high TSAT.
This is my understanding in layman's terms (please correct me if I'm wrong). I have reasonable levels of iron in my blood, but my liver isn't producing enough transferrin to transport it. The result is my transferrin is working hard to get it into storage and is becoming too saturated?
Because my TIBC is under range, I'm guessing the real problem is probably liver related (liver panel came back fine), and probably another symptom of my being Hypo (lipids gone bad as well)?
I haven't been taking any iron supplements, I eat red meat maybe 1-2 a week at most,no pate etc. Seeing as my Ferritin is "reasonable", does it mean I should probably cut down on dietary iron for a while in order to bring down my iron serum levels and hence TSAT, until my Hypothyroidism (Hashi's) is more under control?
Or is everything I've just said completely wrong? 😩
Thanks for any help!
