help with the result while doctor wait!

Hello I posted the other day regarding a blood test for my thyroid, I think hypothyroidism is suspected?

I phoned up this afternoon for the result and all they could say is I need to see the doctor which won’t be until next week, but it was regarding my thyroid antibodies with the note made -

fe Thyroid peroxidase ab 366.0 ml

Could anyone help with what this means, having to wait is making me anxious

thankyou!

Hi Galaxy, I think that just confirms your hypothyroidism (if that's what you have?) Is autoimmune, so Hashimotos. You can request a print out of all your blood results (assuming you are in the UK)

Thank your reply, I don’t know as my first blood test for this was 8 weeks ago where tsh was 5, so that’s why I had other things checked. I haven’t been diagnosed with anything and wondering if I will do now as I feel I have been having symptoms for a while. I will see if I can get them to send me the other results but that’s all she could see when I spoke to her on the phone

Ah okay, yes hopefully they have tested T3 and t4. If you can get a print out then post them on here for advice. Hopefully if your TSH is above range again and the presence of antibodies they will start to treat you. Read up on the NICE guidance for treating Hypothyroidism

Well they're over the normal range which I think is the only thing that matters. I don't think the actual number is particularly important as they go up and down, but just the fact that they are positive is important.

So your first test showed TSH over 5

You need a 2nd test 2-3 months later

ALWAYS test early morning, ideally before 9am for highest TSH . Ideally only drinking water between waking and test

Starting levothyroxine - flow chart

With 2 separate tests, symptoms and high thyroid antibodies, you should be started on levothyroxine

Meanwhile getting vitamin D, folate, B12 and ferritin tested NOW …….and coeliac blood test too

Low vitamin levels are extremely common when hypothyroid, especially with autoimmune thyroid disease

About 90% of primary hypothyroidism is autoimmune thyroid disease, usually diagnosed by high TPO and/or high TG thyroid antibodies

Autoimmune thyroid disease with goitre is Hashimoto’s

Autoimmune thyroid disease without goitre is Ord’s thyroiditis.

Both are autoimmune and generally called Hashimoto’s.

In U.K. medics hardly ever refer to autoimmune thyroid disease as Hashimoto’s (or Ord’s thyroiditis)
