CBD & Hyperthyroidism

Just been diagnosed with Hyperthyroidism - GP has given me Propanolol and carbimazole - I now wait for clinic appoitment I have been told 49 weeks up this way.

My Gp has asked me to stop taking the cbd oil and creams I use to help with the pain of my oseoarthritis. I am only able to take 2 paracetomol and 2 codiene a day as the resulting constipation is horrendous I daren't take any more.

I really want to get back on the cbd as it helped as any one else used it while having overactive thyroid and on these meds .

Any info welcome - thanks

Hello Suzik and welcome to the forum :

Can you please complete your Profile page - so we have a bit more information about you :

There is more than 1 reason why you have become hyperthyroid and generally speaking a full thyroid panel would have been run and which ever antibodies were found positive and over range in your blood test would decide the treatment -

and an Anti Thyroid such as Carbimazole is generally prescribed if the patient has Graves Disease and alongside a beta blocker such as Propranolol if the heart is also involved.

What symptoms do you have and if you care to share your blood test results and ranges -

generally written as a TSH - T3 and T4 -

with antibodies looking like TPO / TgAB / TRab / TSI or written as a TSH Thyroid Receptor Antibody with a single number and cut off - we can explain better what is going on.

Do you believe the CBD oil is responsible for your thyroid malfunction ?

I don't think I've read of this before - but doesn't mean it is or is not - I don't know enough.

Don't get my blood test (first) till 28th results 30th and I will then find out if I get to go on holiday - No don't think cbd oil is responsible in fact it has made life bearable - so rather concerned I have to live without it for 49 weeks or till I see the consultant - I was an extremely fit human until I was 50 and got a mesh fitted since then I have had nephritis - fibromylagia, barretts osoephagus , gall bladder removed and now diagnosed 4 weeks ago with hyperthroidism - I also have bi lateral osteoarthritis in both knees and hips whic is why I took cbd - I can't take painkillers as they make me constipated and the mesh then starts to move.

If you care to share your initial blood tests prior to being put on the Carbimazole on the Beta blocker - as detailed previously - we can try and help explain things for you -

Have you considered going privately - it might just ease the stress and worry of having to wait 49 weeks ?

Thyroid UK - the charity who supports this forum has a list of patient recommended thyroid specialists and endocrinologists both NHS and Private - maybe email admin @ thyroiduk.org just to get a few option - many still offer video consults so distance need not be an issue ?

Did your doctor give you a reason as to why you are not to use CBD oils and creams?

Although having said that I have just googled and found this which could be the reason - the carb you are taking is to stop an overproduction of thyroid hormone

“Interactions With Thyroid Medications

Levothyroxine is a medication used to treat hypothyroidism and thyroid cancer. Research suggests that CBD may interact with levothyroxine and cause the thyroid gland to secrete more thyroid hormone than the body can metabolize.[22 ] When this occurs, too much thyroid hormone may accumulate in the body and lead to hyperthyroidism.

Talk with your healthcare provider before taking CBD, especially if you currently take prescription medication to manage a thyroid condition. CBD may interact with other medications you’re taking, and your healthcare provider should be able to provide guidance on whether or not CBD is safe for you.

The Health Benefits of CBD Oil for Thyroid Conditions “

Also could you take 2 paracetamol twice a day and skip the codeine? Also, it might be worth looking on the NRAS site in Healthunlocked to see if anyone on there can suggest anything that would help with your osteoarthritis pain.

she suggested I wait till I see consultant (in 49 weeks - the only time I felt no pain apart from on cbd was when taking 8 paracetamiol and 8 codiene a day - I feel 2 sprays of cbd giving me 8 hours no pains or constipation was great but I do not want to affect the thyroid so will do what I am told - I just wondered if anyone who had had it longer knew anything about it,

Oh gosh, what a dilemma for you! 49 weeks is almost a year! Apart from being hyper you have lots of other problems don’t you - is that the dreaded vaginal *mesh* that is subject to a court case you have?

Anyway, are you still taking your CBD? If so how do you feel taking that and the propranolol and carbimazole?

You could always tell your doctor you simply cannot wait all that time without your CBD spray and see if she can hurry things up. Or could she prescribe some sort of painkiller you can take?

Could you afford to see an endo privately or even do your own private blood tests to keep an eye on what’s going on with your levels? I do my own because the NHS only tests my TSH these days which is a waste of time.

Not what you're looking for?
