teeth clenching

I’m titrating NDT Armour over the last year but I’ve got a hypo symptom that’s bothering me, nighttime teeth clenching.

I have no knowledge I’m doing this. I take amitriptyline and once I get to sleep midnight to 1am, I’m out for the count.

I think the dentist told me September 2023 that I was clenching my teeth. When I had a checkup in March 2024, I’ve cracked a back tooth 😫

I’m using a mouth guard at night but I’m now aware of pressing my teeth together in the day too. Jaw and neck tension too.

All in all I am feel much better. My T3 is the best it’s ever been and at my recent review, Armour dose is staying the same. I was a bit surprised no increase because I’m only taking one and a quarter grains.

Just teeth clenching and getting to sleep earlier left to improve! Any teeth tips please?

I do this too. First started after jaw surgery years ago so I've bite guards for a long time. But since becoming hypothyroid the clenching now affects my jaw muscles to the point of some level of my jaw locking in the morning as well as increased clicking.

I don't really have much of a solution for you. I find for me thicker chewy bite guards work better and symptoms reduce when my levels are better and my energy management is better.

Hi, I have the same problem. The only thing helping is to keep the mouth guard at night and try relaxing as well.

I would suggest that you try taking a magnesium supplement in the evening before bed. It helps people to relax. I clench and grind my teeth too, and magnesium helps reduce the clenching and grinding for me. It isn't a guaranteed 100% cure though, it might just reduce your problem by a small amount. To find out if it helps, you'll just have to try it.

There are a couple of things to take into consideration. The body excretes excess magnesium via the kidneys in urine. For that to happen the patient must have functioning kidneys. Taking magnesium with failed or failing kidneys could be dangerous.

Magnesium toxicity : en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyper...

There are quite a lot of different magnesium supplements available, but they aren't all worth taking. See these links :

Magnesium is an essential electrolyte. Some of the other electrolytes in the body have effects on muscles too.

This is worth reading to see if you can spot other symptoms you are familiar with, caused by excess or deficiency of other electrolytes. :
