Hi, anybody found out if ferrous fumerate can be got without sodium lauryl sulphate. I need the iron badly but suffer because of the SLS.

It appears that you cannot - at least, not as a UK-licensed product.

There are a couple of products which also contain folic acid - but you might very well not wish to take that much, or any, folic acid depending on lots of factors.

Galfer FA 350mg (also contain folic acid 350 micrograms).

Pregaday

The active substances are Ferrous Fumarate and Folic Acid. Each tablet contains 322mg ferrous fumarate (equivalent to 100mg iron) and 0.35 mg folic acid.

There are many other forms of iron which are available in a huge range of products, dosages, formulations. And there are ferrous fumarate products without sodium lauryl sulphate available from various "vitamin" suppliers.

(If you are searching, it might be important to type Fumarate correctly! Some searches (such as the MHRA one) are very fussy and will not find things if even one character is wrong.)

Hi Mattie2022,

Have you looked at liquid/syrup iron ? They may contain other additives but possibly ones that you can tolerate?

Yes - there are two syrups licensed in the UK.

Fersamal

lecithin vegetable, elderberry flavour, sodium metabisulphite (E223) and

purified water.

Nipastat contains methyl hydroxybenzoate, ethyl hydroxybenzoate, propyl

However, I can also see there might be some other products which are not specifically UK-licensed. The associated Patient Information Leaflets are not on the MHRA site, nor on EMC site.

They are listed in the British National Formulary:

Hi Mattie2022I'm now looking for iron supplements with less fillers. I'm on Pernicious Aneamia site too,due to b12/ferritin issues and there's been mention on there about iron supplement called Three Arrows. It's from America, pricier than fumarate and derived from animals? Will let you.know what other products I come across on my search...

Wow, thank you helvella, that’s extremely helpful, interesting and so well presented. Will work my way through the links and it’s saved such a lot of time researching, brilliant. My ferritin has dropped to 37 since recent b12 loading dose, I’ve been on ferrous fumerate, but not keen on additives and been wondering whether to consider the Three Arrows, debating the price, but people seem to find the absorption good, which could result in quicker mending!

Yes, have got chicken livers back on shopping list, managed to find some organic ones reasonably priced, used to eat twice a week and have slipped recently! Also eating more nuts and hoping to feel better soon, though know it can be a slow process!

Thank you very much….
