Breakfast

Why do I always feel worse following breakfast? Most days my breakfast consists of uncooked porridge oats, loads of f fruit and warm milk. Are there any breakfast recommendations out there?

I think I would have a change…. Try something new (just make sure you leave at least an hour between milk and taking Levothyroxine).

Maybe this link might inspire you!

Many of us become dairy intolerant once we start on levo as it can stop the production of lactase

TiggerMe Levothyroxine can stop lactase production? Do you have a recent source for that? I think I recall seeing decades old references to lactose and levo experiments on animals, but nothing related to humans.

I shall have to go digging I'm sure helvella and I have discussed it in the past, I'm thinking I heard it on a thyroid podcast as I remember the 💡moment

I suspect you might be remembering my very early draft of a suspicion/guess!

helvella - Lactose, Lactase and Hypothyroidism

A speculative discussion about why lactose might have specific issues when used in levothyroxine medicines.

I think that would make me feel pretty unwell, too. Not much protein, and protein is necessary in the morning to support your adrenals. Something with eggs might be better, something along the lines of a German/Dutch breakfast which includes eggs/sausage/cheese/cold meats, adapted to your tastes and tolerances.

Myself, I always have wholemeal bread with butter and cream cheese and half a tomato, followed by a large cup of tea with ginger and honey. I find that the most satisfying of all the things I've tried eating in the morning. :)

Have you considered that "loads of fruit" could be delivering loads of sugar? And that along with the carbohydrate constituent of the oats also providing sugar - after digestion. And lactose in the milk.

I make no recommendations as to what to eat. But suggest the simplest approach - just try some different things. Others have made specific suggestions. Whereas I suggest making a list of several things and go through that list. Make notes of what seems better and what doesn't.

One reason I make no recommendations is that I have absolutely no breakfast beyond a black unsweetened, coffee.

I would soak oats overnite and cook for better digestion. Also fruit is best eaten separately, half hour gap.

You didn't say in what way you feel worse?

Some days I have scrambled eggs and mushrooms - sliced and cooked in butter. Other days it's boiled eggs with toast.

If you like fruit you might like to try what I have after I saw it recommended as a balanced start to the day. Banana omelette . You mix a mashed banana up with 2 eggs & fry in a non stick pan. It’s surprisingly good with bacon etc, it cooks quickly because of the suger in the banana so take care not to get it too brown as it then tastes bitter.

I struggle with too much carb, especially at breakfast. Porridge made with water and lactose free milk is OK with oat bran as well as oats, peanut butter, pumpkin seeds, ground flaxseed and just a little fruit. A small cooked breakfast is ok with not too much carby stuff or fat, and I tend to avoid eggs as they are a bit"binding"for me, a good option if you don't find this though. Usually I have a veg and coconut water smoothy with a little each of ground flaxseed & oat bran, and protein powder, but I'm careful which brand as some allegedly contain heavy metals and other contaminants.

Trial and error worked for me, noting reactions to various options over a few days.
