Hi all, can you please tell me what most people on Levothyroxine have for breakfast? I am finding it hard to avoid fibre ,milk/yogurt. Many thanks!

Hi I'm gluten and dairy free so for breakfast I have berries and fruit with gluten free granola and koko coconut yogurt. It's really nice. You can also have gluten free bread/bagels or pancakes. Genuis do a good range of products. There are plenty of gluten free cereals and you could try nut milk ? Not soya milk as we are not to have soya with hashimoto's

Oh I didn't know we could go gluten free options as I thought they also contain fibres. Thank you!

Some of the items may contain fibre but then we all need fibre in our diet anyway to keep things moving. Why are you avoiding fibre ?

I was told by my endocrinologist to avoid high fibre foods 4h after taking levothyroxine that's why.

High fibre, maybe. But not all fibre. :)

I was told by my endocrinologist to avoid milk/ calcium and fibre 4h after taking levothyroxine as it interferes with the absorption of the hormone.

I have porridge. Bran affects levothyroxine absorption, I don't know of any study that suggests all fibre affects absorption, especially soluble fibre as in porridge. Foods other than bran and coffee have a small effect on absorption so they are OK. Alternatively take your levothryoxine at bedtime. Don't get into restrictive diets.

If I can have porridge than that would be amazing. Trying to keep things as simple as possible.

Calcium and fibre supplements you must avoid for two hours

It's 4 hours for calcium supplements (iron and magnesium and Vit D too) :)

Koko04 - just for info

NHS guidelines recommend avoiding calcium rich foods for four hours after taking Levothyroxine

nhs.uk/medicines/levothyrox...

Perhaps one of the reasons some of us find it can work better taking it at bedtime

does the same guidance apply to liothyronine? (avoiding calcium-rich foods for 4 hours?)

SlowDragon profile image

I don't think so

Liothyronine is absorbed much more rapidly than Levothyroxine

Thanks. That's a thought! One of those things you realise are obvious once someone points it out! At the moment I don't seem to need T3, hope that's never as it's so difficult to get on the NHS

Hello Koko04,

I have found that I can’t eat bread, but I have found that GI loaf from Lidl I can, so I either have toast with 2 boiled eggs, or porridge if I’m hungry I have both, hope this helps.

I have hot bread with cream cheese or crumpets with butter; and a cup of ginger tea with milk and honey. I have that at least one hour after my T3 (don't take levo) - sometimes about three hours, depends what I'm doing. And, I know that's all fine because I would soon notice if I weren't absorbing my T3! :)
