Is it really necessary to chew NDT? I've done it most of my life but recently started swallowing it whole because of my teeth. I take my thyroid medicine at around 4 am and go back to sleep sometimes for several hours. I've had a lot of cavities and dry mouth for the last year and a half. I don't know if Thyroid S sitting on my teeth or a couple hours will hurt them or not. Do you? I don't want to become hypo from not chewing it. Please let me know your thoughts. Thanks, Easy

Chewing Thyroid-S before swallowing?
NDT, like all other forms of thyroid hormone replacement, is designed to be swallowed whole. Not chewed. There's no necessity to chew it.
Easylover,
I’ve always swallowed my NDT with a whole glass of water. This reminisces from my Levothyroxine days when we were told to 'whoosh' the tablet down to reach the right place in the gut for maximum absorption.
I don't think NDT needs to be whooshed down but I don't think it needs to be chewed or taken sub-lingually either. Just swallowing it with a little water is enough as it is bound to thyroglobulin that stomach acids will eventually digest and release those hormones.
I don't think it hurts your teeth too bad, but maybe sip water afterwards? I find it makes a big difference to chew these newer tablets (from 2022 on) versus swallowing whole. Probably because they changed the formula and put in more cellulose and less dextrose.
Did you find the cause for the cavities and dry mouth?
No, I'm so concerned. YES, DRY MOUTH, all of it. I was taping my mouth for a while whilst I slept because mouth open? Gee wiz!¿
I've been chewing it n am starting to feel better. Thank you for your advice!
