Constipation help

Hello lovely people,

I suffered from pretty bad bowel movement before but now that I have been prescribed strong iron it is much worse. I knew this would happen as my stomach doesn't tolerate iron very well so my GP also prescribed me Laxido. I have been taking two sachets a day and whilst I'm not completely blocked up, I still feel like it is not working very well (not going very regularly and when I need to go it comes on very quickly).

Can anyone please advice how you have manage constipation and if there is anything better I can ask the GP for? She claimed Laxido was the "creme de la creme" of laxatives.

Ps. I have ordered three arrows iron but 4 weeks on and it still hasn't arrived. Tracking now says next week but keep being moved.

Magnesium citrate taken in afternoon or bedtime (at least 4 hours away from levothyroxine) may help

Calm vitality magnesium powder is cheap and easy to use. Start on low dose and increase slowly until you get desired effect

Highish dose vitamin C is another option

Are you now taking daily vitamin B complex to improve B12

Do you think it is safe to increase the dose further?

I take Vitamin C with my iron (1000mg a day)

I had a b12 injection which made me feel really good so I'm going to have that monthly.

The B complex made me very hungry?! So I stopped taking it.

I currently take these and have for years. I take two a day in the afternoon.

Try Igennus vitamin B complex

Initially try just half or even 1/4 tablet per day

Take B vitamins in morning after breakfast

I asked to be given ferrous fumarate, which is much easier on your stomach.

That's what I am on. Not finding it easy on the stomach at all...

Oh dear, you must be more sensitive than I am. Have you tried oats, prunes, apricots and high fibre foods? Mango is really good for constipation, especially if you eat the peel as well.

Go well

I have a similar problem and have had for the best part of 5 decades(!) (found to have a "spastic colon" - the 'official' diagnosis I was given! - following a laparotomy for what turned out to be my appendix and lower bowel being strangled by adhesions..or a "lazy bowel" as another Dr put it!! 👀) and find that what    Pastelart has suggested helps but, the things that work consistently well for me are:

-- soft dried figs (I get the Sainsbury's So Organic ones, which are delicious, and Crazy Jack ones are another I used to get but, don't see them around as much) - just 2 or 3 cut up in the morning with other fruit : I have a small satsuma/easy peeler(also good to get the bowels moving!) and a banana and sometimes add a kiwi as well; and I have that with a mug of boiled water before anything else for breakfast. Or you could try adding the figs to oats, porridge or whatever cereal you may have for breakfast;

-- another one I remember when I was younger (after the bowel problems first started) and still living at home was one that my late mother used to make, which was either dried [pitted] prunes or a dried fruit mix (dried apple pieces, banana's and I can't remember what else) which had the pitted prunes in as well:

* Soak well covered in cold water in a bowl for a few hours or overnight.

* Transfer to a pan after soaking and boil/simmer in the water they've been soaked in until soft and being sure not to let them boil dry/leave enough juice to cover them.

* Let them cool before transferring to a container in the fridge then you can either take out what you need for each serving to have say with Yoghurt - any of the dairy free ones would be delicious with them or even a dairy free creme fraiche-type blob with them.

* Alternatively, if you've got a blender you could blend the cooled mix with one of the thicker yoghurts/dairy free yoghurts to make a fruit fool type mix which, if divided into smaller ramekin pots before being returned to the fridge, would then give you deserts for after dinner or lunch.

Hope these suggestions help, along with the others, to get you 'moving' via a more natural route than the "creme de la creme" your doctor has prescribed!

Another "Go well" from me, too! 🙂

P.S. Another one which never fails to work is a pot (or good mug) of fresh/ground coffee and I always drink plenty of mugs of boiled water which is both soothing on the stomach/system, as well as keeping me hydrated and helping to keep me regular. ETA: 5 decades not 50!! 🙄😵‍💫😂

oh gosh, i have now been constipated for a week now and nothing seems to move me, but thinking i will get FiberGel to see if it works, i eat lots of green veg and fruit which normally helps, and i just wonder if any vitamins i take could be the cause. I have always been irregular but not like now, I have no pain or discomfort, but its worrying.
