Husband's new results TSH and T4 March 2024

My husband's last TSH and T4 blood test was Nov 2023.His latest results are as follows

FT4 15.9 pmol/L 10.80 - 25.50pmol/L

TSH 7.66mIU/L 0.27 - 4.20mIU/L

The TSH has reduced slightly and his FT4 has increased .

He has been told to redo bloods in a month.

Any idea why he is not being offered treatment?

Can it fix itself?

what are his symptoms

He needs to get full thyroid and vitamin testing done

TSH, FT4 and FT3 tested

Also both TPO and TG thyroid antibodies tested at least once to see if hypothyroidism is autoimmune

Very important to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 at least once year minimum

Low vitamin levels are extremely common when hypothyroid, especially with autoimmune thyroid disease

Low vitamin levels more common as we get older too

Have these been tested

About 90% of primary hypothyroidism is autoimmune thyroid disease, usually diagnosed by high TPO and/or high TG thyroid antibodies

Autoimmune thyroid disease with goitre is Hashimoto’s

Autoimmune thyroid disease without goitre is Ord’s thyroiditis.

Both are autoimmune and generally called Hashimoto’s.

Significant minority of Hashimoto’s patients only have high TG antibodies (thyroglobulin)

20% of autoimmune thyroid patients never have high thyroid antibodies and ultrasound scan of thyroid can get diagnosis

In U.K. medics hardly ever refer to autoimmune thyroid disease as Hashimoto’s (or Ord’s thyroiditis)

Recommended that all thyroid blood tests early morning, ideally just before 9am, only drink water between waking and test

This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip)

Private tests are available as NHS currently rarely tests Ft3 or all relevant vitamins

Hello, unfortunately private testing is not possible due to cost.

As I have Ords hypothyroidism, I recognised his symptoms a long time ago, but everyone mocked me and said that just because I have it, it doesn't mean everyone has it! As if I thought that.

He is fatigued, forgetful, difficulty concentrating, weight gain, slow speech, breathlessness, aches and pains, insomnia, deep voice.

Is this first test with TSH over 5 ?

Politely request GP test vitamin levels and thyroid antibodies at next thyroid test 6-8 weeks after this abnormal test result

Book early morning test, ideally before 9am

Starting levothyroxine - flow chart

Is he currently taking any other medications and is he taking any vitamin supplements

If yes, what exactly

His test in November 2023 was similar, but GP said to retest in 3 months, hence March 2024, and now again next month. He was given statins, but they made him feel worse, so stopped them.

He is on mirtazapine for sleep, and amlodipine for high blood pressure. He is also approaching pre type 2 diabetes.

I am aware that high blood pressure, high cholesterol , high glucose, are all linked to underactive thyroid.
