Looking for help- 11 year old son , bad hives, TPO >1000

Good afternoon, I keep hitting the wall and all I do is call different doctors. It's been since 2.14 since my son ( 11 years old) has been experiencing bad hives daily. Pediatrician send us to allergy specialist, they did not find any allergies and I pushed for more blood work. TPO came back very high >1000, but TSH was normal 2.81. We were reffered to endo and they said nothing can be done since TSH is normal....Hives are daily and bad. To control them I give him 2-3 pills per day of citrizine but it is just masking the issue. The problem is with his autoimmune system and no one is helping us... any recomendation?

Are you in the U.K.?

Get his GP to do more tests

Was thyroid test done early morning, this gives highest TSH

Essential to test TSH, Ft4 and Ft3 together

Plus

Vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12

And coeliac blood test as per NICE guidelines

can you tell me the link with hives and thyroid and also coeliac? My daughter has daily hives and we are thinking of histamine issues. She is trying to conceive but from a little reserch this condition could be reducing her chances. She is desperate for any help.

The blood work was done in the afternoon on 03/20/2024 (after school) , would you recommend fasting prior to any additional blood work? The tests were ordered by Allergy specialist and after the results I was referred to Endocrinology, but they said they can not help me because the TSH level was normal....Endocrinologist is saying that I need to see different Allergy specialist...so hitting the wall and getting no help while my son is suffering daily. We are going on week 8 by taking Cetirizine daily 2-3 pills a day, by they no longer seem to work. I also saw Naturopathic consultant on 3.31 and we were told to take gluten, wheat, dairy out of the daily diet. We have been watching all the nutrition and have taken all the items off the daily consumption but have not seen a progress. Will call today to request more blood work done including repeat test for TSH, FT4 , FT3 together and Vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12. I really appreciate the help!

Essential to include thyroid antibodies for autoimmune thyroid disease

Also request coeliac blood test

Private test options for Thyroid and vitamin levels

Blue Horizon will test children, but only if attend at their London clinic apparently

Hives and Link to gut infection possibly

As a mom of a 17 year year old with ambiguous tsh/freeTs/vitamin deficiencies, I did a very deep dive on pediatric ranges and interpretations.

This article linked below I found to be excellent- as it summarizes and presents data from a few studies that measure how results distributed across different ages:

thyroidpatients.ca/2022/07/...

caveat - you haven’t given us the precise units of measure for the TSH number, so evaluate the article and the below in context of what’s accurate for you.

But regardless of ranges, one takeaway is - pediatric TSH ranges are lower than adult TSH ranges. So even if “in range,” it will be deceptive if one is assuming an adult range with a higher upper range.

Because of this, it’s a reason why TSH alone is insufficient for assessing children. (Kind of like for adults - but worse because of the default use of adult ranges for the tests).

That being said, with the high TPO, you have less of a mystery and the article also details how you can evaluate pediatric Free T levels as well.

I highly recommend a careful reading of the whole article from one mom to another. It really gave me confidence in my knowledge of what may or may not be “normal” for my daughter.

But I will also paste one graphic I found particularly useful for me, that when you look where 2.8 falls in the scatter plot for 11 year olds it’s clear it’s anything but “normal” as visually it’s about 80% of other kids in that age range are lower.

Hi do the hives come and go or are they there all the time?

Do they itch?

I have FDEIA and also am actually allergic to wheat ,not celiac, and corn and oats and barley and things like potassium sorbate.

Is he experiencing any other symptoms like nausea ,faintness?Anaphalaxis?

Try to eliminate everything it could be from water ,excercise ,food -I had to be my own detective and the consultants new nothing!

I do hope you get his thyroid bloods sorted too.

So very sorry that he is experiencing this.

I also need an epipen always just in case.

Best wishes

Hi. Have you checked out Dr Sarah Myhill? Our then 14 yr old daughter had awful painful digestive issues and it was hell for her for 10 years as NHS were useless! Got an appointment with Private GP, Dr Myhill, and one appointment sorted the whole scenario out. The fact that there was an answer that gave her her life back was wonderful. Worth every penny! Mind you we paid for.private hospital consultant before this and my research was taken by him for free! Don't give up and don't back down as your son's health and happiness will be your reward!

Hi. Your poor son. Not nice. My friend ended up with very bad hives all over her body. It started after she had a covid jab. It went on for a while. She saw a homaopathy who put her right. 🙂

Citrizine can have dermatological side effects, rash and itching. It's not common, but it can happen. Many drugs can cause hives, even if not initially. I would try switching to benedryl (diphenhydramine) while you're waiting on more tests.

poor chap, that looks sore and itchy. I send my best wishes for a speedy resolution. You have some really good suggestions.

Have you looked at mast cell response and histamine? In our family once one thing has triggered we get hyper sensitive to other things that wouldn’t normally affect us. Me is always foods, daughter is always stuff on skin, son is always pollens and animal fur. Hubby is hazelnuts.

I heard a podcast recently that said mast cell response can be dampened with DAO (found in pigs liver or more palatable freshly sprouted legumes) we soak green lentils in water for 24 hours then put them drained on the windowsill and in 2 days we have sprouts. Maybe worth a try x

Possibly this one podcasts.apple.com/gb/podca...

oh and there is a link between the pet flea treatment ivermectin and allergies. I get really wheezy when the cat is done. 🌱
