Thorne Basic B Alternative

Good morning team!

I started taking Thorne Basic B yesterday and I am not reacting well to it.

My private blood results should be back today and I'll hold off purchasing anything else until then but I was hoping someone could recommend a complex with lower dosages, please?

I don't know if it's the B12 or B6 but according to Doctor Google either can cause side effects. I am getting dizzy, having palpitations, and my hands are numb. As my liver is currently problematic due to hyperthyroidism and Carbimazole, and apparently this is where excess B12 is stored, I think I should discontinue use.

Thank you for any advice / recommendations in advance.

I have just started this:

swiss bioenergetics

Vitamin B Complex Plus - 90 Capsules - Superior Methylated Formula with Added Choline, PABA & Inositol - Includes Essential Multi B-Vitamins B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B12, Biotin & Folate

(I'll not link as I do not want to promote it.)

I think the Thorne has too much of some ingredients. So every other day, or every third day, might be enough!

I'm perfectly happy if anyone thinks there are issues with this product - I was looking for something with lower quantities, yet included P-5-P form of B6 and methylfolate. And at a reasonable price.

Only a few days so far but how can we ever be sure without comprehensive blood tests and/or clear changes in our health?

B12 is very unlikely to be causing an issue. Just think of those who inject 1000 micrograms even up to every day. The general view is that you are unlikely to absorb more than 10 micrograms from each dose of oral B12.

Thank you very much - once my blood test results are back and barring any reason not to from those, I'll invest in these instead.

I didn't even consider the B vits when I felt ill yesterday and my understanding is we just pass any excess - but about an hour after taking them this morning I felt awful again. Perhaps I just need to get used to them but starting on lower dosages may be helpful.

Thank you

Looks like a good one... like you say some of the others are a bit OTT but when you start skipping days it all becomes a bit hit and miss 😵... I've just swapped to VitaBright which I could cut in half as tablets🤷‍♀️

Very sensible packaging rather than the impractical cylinders!

But I just bought the Thorne basic B Complex!!!! Haven’t started taking it yet.

After reading that regenallotment spreadsheet and thread…. It looked like the most basic go-to choice.

Who knew picking a B complex was so…… complex (lol)

But seriously… is that Thorne one too jam packed and likely to cause issues????? I want enough of everything but not too much?!

An oft repeated phrase here: We are all different.

I am fairly convinced that taking B12 helps me. And I simply wanted to make sure I wasn't ignoring the rest of the B vitamins. I likely get quite a lot from diet but as a just-in-case wanted something to make sure.

That is why I wanted something but felt that Thorne - from its label - was too much. Hence, as I reached the end of my Thorne, I was looking for lower dose (and price!). Not convinced that dosing one in two, or one in three, days is the best approach which also pushed me away from Thorne.

Thorne is very good (but not always available) especially when first starting to correct deficiencies but I'm with 🍄you probably only need to take it every couple of days once you have optimised and then you need to remember 😅

For us long term users a light version is handy

I should note at this point I’m talking about my daughter. I haven’t made my B decisions for myself yet.

But anyway - just started her in the B12 spray.

It’s her B12 that I’m tackling.

I wonder if I should give her 6-8 weeks on the Vit B12 alone just to simplify the impact I’m measuring if B complex is nit as clear cut to choose as I thought.

I think Regenallotment said something about alternate day also.

So I’m sensing a trend.

Although my daughter is great at not forgetting (we fill the pill holder every week) I do want her to get enough but not too much.

Maybe I wait the 6 weeks, test her again, then consider adding the complex.

Thoughts?

I'd be inclined to get her started on the B complex a week after adding B12 as it covers all the other things that are essential, good folate levels are important as it works together with B12 in things like red blood cell production

Ok! Back to Plan A… for Vitamin B!

Last question - if it was you, your opinion, might I put her on one a day… or should I maybe skip a day or two?

Also since I’ve got you, my daughter isn’t on thyroid meds, just iron, D and magnesium.

Does B need to stay away from any of those?

Sounds like you have my daughter!

What are her folate levels like? If not to low then alternate days would do

B's best am as can be stimulating, if it's a sublingual D then they can be taken together, I can't remember if that's true with tablet form I think it's ok, iron is best kept away from everything by a couple of hours and magnesium is best before bed

With my daughter I got her on a loading dose for the first month so one a day and then eased off, so with Thorne dropped to a couple a week

So I'd suggest B's & D breakfast, iron middle of the day, and mag in the evening

Edit, just looked at your last post and our daughters have very similar thyroid results, my daughters free's improved with a good supplement regime and dropped back a bit when she eased off... a visible difference

This is a handy post for comparing... some like Igennus are 2 tablets per dose so easier to take less than with Thorne which is one capsule healthunlocked.com/thyroidu...

Just to update in case anyone is interested -

I tried two other B complex and same result. It seems I simply cannot take them at the moment, for whatever reason.

As it stands, I am taking a separate Methylfolate and have started using a B12 spray before bed. I know that's not ideal but it gives me a headache. This way I'm asleep when the headache kicks in.

I'll look into this more at a later date but for now, if I can get folate and b12 up, I'm ticking a couple of things off my list!

In the meantime, I am awaiting a GP appointment about possible absorption issues.

If anyone else comes across this in the future and has any comments, please do add, as I imagine this will be a long process.
