I've had chronic urticaria for about 9 months. I decreased by thybon about a year ago, but didn't make the connection between the hives for a while. Recently had my thyroid levels checked and my T3 was very low. My Thybon was increased to 40mg a day and within a couple of weeks there was about a 90 percent decrease in hives. I went from my whole body being covered daily, to having one or two. I knew it would take a few months to get my T3 up, so felt hopeful I would keep getting better
Last week I ran out of my Thybon script and took an old script (dated April 2023, so almost a year out of date).
Within a couple of days the hives were back and kept getting worse. I finally got back o my in-date script on Thursday, and I'm praying things resolve again.
I've been trying to research how much potency I would lose from the meds being out of date. I'm just very anxious about having the chronic urticaria as bad as it was as it was honestly ruining my life, and thought I'd found the answer.
I was very early on into treatment so I'm hoping that the disruption in meds is the main cause, and not anything else.
Does anyone know what happens when thybon goes out of date? Would it be like I wasn't taking it at all for a few days?
It would be great to get any advice on this. Thank you!

Hi. The expiry date doesn't really indicate a point at which the medication is no longer effective ( Just checked that up) online, so it seems that they become less active ie, weaken over time.
Hi, yeah I've seen that online but then I've seen other people say on older posts here that doctors have told them it massively effects it, so it's all very confusing.I think I can only assume it was the out of date meds given that things had started massively improving with the increased dose, when nothing else had worked. I also had chronic urticaria in 2020 that went away when I went on T3. So I'm just hoping that what's gone wrong is the out of date meds in combination with my extremely sensitive body🙈
I don't think doctors would have clue about that! Just because they say something doesn't mean it's true. They just don't like admitting they don't know.
I've taken T3 older than that and it was fine. And I've read that the American army did some research on out of date meds and found that most of them were just fine ages after the use-by date - but I can't remember how long they said. helvella can you remember that? I know you mentioned it. I thought I made a note of it somewhere but can't find it.
Yeah I've read that too but also read other studies saying it would affect it. It's so hard to know. But I'm just hoping the drug not being as potent is what caused the hives to come back.
Well, it's not a drug, it's thyroid hormone replacement. But, in my experience, it didn't affect it at all. Sorry to hear about the hives. Have you tried increasing the dose a little?
I've used expired medicines quite often. If T3 seems to be weaker than I expected I just raise the dose rather than throw it away. I don't usually have to raise the dose very much or very often.
I would always throw away medicines/tablets/capsules which
a) Started to smell different from what they did when fresh
I use Thybon Henning and have thrown my out of date Thybon away. I wouldn’t trust it past the advised expiry date. The expiry date is on there for a reason. When manufacturing pharmaceuticals there are extremely strict guidelines and regulations. I use to work for Seqirus who manufactures the influenza vaccine. The rules are very stringent. Everything they use to make the vaccine has expiry dates on down to the minutest of ingredient. Any one of those ingredients or what is known as the bill of materials can age after production. They all have a shelf life. I would not want my optimal thyroid levels be disrupted through expired medication myself. I always make sure I have good stocks of my meds by planning ahead. I was the materials supply chain manager there so I guess it’s in my nature to plan ahead.
I think vaccine meds are probably different, I regularly buy short date thyroid meds as cheaper and use a year or so later no probs and no change in counts, that’s just my experience of course.
Maybe as you buy short date thyroid meds you’ll not know if you bought a fresh pack a difference in your count could make. As you’ve only use short dates.
Getting t3 is nearly impossible for me. I've been getting good results the last few months with otc thyroid glandulars, iodine, tyrosine and other supplements including guggul, which some say is a natural t3.

I have Thybon and right near the end date I find them less effective. Hopefully I won’t get down low to have to use near the end date. I definitely get hypo symptoms. I only take 12.5mcg with levo, but if that’s what I need, then my body will let me know
