Before I was diagnosed with thyroiditis and hyper phase I would eat fish three times a week. I've stopped as cos is very high in iodine.....was I right to do so as I didn't get any advice from GP about diet.

What to eat?
Hi there, the thyroid needs iodine in order to make t3 and t4, and your thyroid is obviously making more hormone than it should. However, I wouldn't think it would make any difference how much fish you eat (obviously too little iodine would be a problem) because you are on carbimazole, which will be limiting hormone production. So, I would say keep eating that fish! However, I'm not a doctor, and another member might know better.
It depends on the fish obviously, but I imagine the benefits you get from eating the fish far outweigh the negatives. I would think anti-inflammatory/Mediterranean if you’re thinking diet.
I eat fish at least three times a week as a main meal. For lunch Sardines, etc. When I first joined this site back in 2015 I was informed about the iodine and took a test which showed normal levels, not excessive.
Hi there if you have Hashi's or Ord's - then I am not a lover of iodine - one very eminent author once wrote that it was like exploding a nuclear bomb within the thyroid gland - but eating fish is good for you but I would not recommend tuna - as that is load with mercury unfortunately - I prefer tinned red salmon from say John West (not in brine) but tomato sauce - Wild Pacific only otherwise it can come from some rather dubious sources of 'dirty waters' - oily fish is also good for you too as you probably know but I wouldn't worry about the iodine as I don't think today anything has the properties it used to have years ago but you could always check on the internet - ask the question how much iodine is in ??????? - back in the 1970's taking kelp for iodine was a fad within the health food industry and I fell for it and I really think this is what caused my thyroid problems - yes they say there is an iodine deficiency throughout the world but I have had so many 'discussions' with health food supplement companies saying that it should not be put into supplements without offering a non iodine product and a couple of them have done so - (not due to me I daresay but it was becoming apparent that it is not good for thyroid conditions). Keep eating your fish but make sure it is from a good source i.e. walking around a supermarket and 'smelling' fish from the counter is wrong - fish does not generally smell that odious if it is fresh !
Thank you Rose off England, Brightness14 and posthinking01 that is really encouraging. I have missed my fish! I am lucky that we have a local fish van that sells fresh fish and a wonderful seafood restaurant that does great fish and chips!!!!
Thank you?
Sorry didn't mean a ? I meant a !
I’d say the most important thing is to make sure it’s sustainably caught! Otherwise enjoy….. There’s iodine in cheese and milk too. My daughter who was diagnosed at 15/16 was asked by Charing Cross Hospital to try a no iodine diet for a few weeks which had no effect whatsoever. (Turned out we knew more about diet than the hospital dietician! ).
There’s lots of unnecessary dietary concerns …like cabbage can make you hypothyroid …. But you’ve have to eat a shed load of cabbages every day for it to have an effect and other effects would have stopped you eating that much long before! 😊
