I know a lot of us taking B Complex so posting this article to hear your thoughts. I take one from cytoplasm where it’s 16mg, I wonder if this is ok 🤔

Okay, I'm very dubious about this.

For decades we've been told that high cholesterol is dangerous and high levels will increase our risk of heart attack and stroke.

For a long time people who didn't want to take statins were told niacin was a substitute, but not as good as statins.

Now they are saying that high levels of niacin can actually cause heart attack and stroke.

What they haven't said is what constitutes a high level of niacin?

I wonder if the profits from statins are dropping and so they want to scare people off niacin and onto statins?

It would seem that they have taken to trying to put everyone 'of an age' on statins, friend of mine said she had a text out of the blue the other day from her GP to collect statins.... I asked after her cholesterol levels?... no idea, never been tested, routine check up had been cancelled and not rebooked?? 🤷‍♀️ Turns out her friend had received the same notification

There is this qrisk3 calculator which estimates what your risk of cardiovascular disease is.

qrisk.org/

There is a certain age at which no matter what numbers you put in you will always have a risk greater than 10%. I think the age for men when this happens is slighter lower than that for women, but I can't remember the age in either case. But perhaps those ages are what the doctors are using to put people on statins without ever measuring cholesterol. (I'm only guessing though.)

Malcolm Kendrick has mentioned qrisk on his blog from time to time. This is just one of his blogs mentioning it :

So, if I've understood correctly, niacin reduces cholesterol levels? Is that correct? If so, that could be why it increases risk of strokes. Having low cholesterol greatly increases your risk of heart attacks/strokes because cholesterol actually stops you having a heart attack by healing damage to the arteries. If there's not enough cholesterol to do its job, then the damage increases uncontrolled. It's all a load of rot, anyway!

says Stanley Hazen at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio. “There is something that we are missing.”

Well, he got that right!

This might be worth reading on the subject :

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Niaci...

I can't say I understand the biochemistry of niacin's effects on high cholesterol, I've just read that niacin has been prescribed for that purpose.

Thank you for the link, but that's all a bit above my head given the state of my head today! :)

Needs consideration as some B complex products claim "Niacin (as Niacinamide and Niacin)" or similar. You therefore need to understand whether niacinamide also has the same issues, and whether the quantities and proportions change the perceived effect.
