Test Result

Hi all,

Following my previous post regarding my struggle to be diagnosed and treated as hypothyroid, I have paid for testing as my GP has been advised by endocrinologist to wait until June before retesting me. My results are posted over 3 posts. My T4 has actually improved. Any advice will be appreciated.

What were folate, B12 and ferritin results

With TSH over 5, high thyroid antibodies and symptoms you should be started on levothyroxine

Hi,

Do you think I should take vitamin supplements? I’m surprised by my low normal Vit D as I already take 1000iu daily.

Optimal vitamin D is 80-125nmol so you’re not far off

But when hypothyroid we frequently need higher dose vitamin D than typical

GP will often only prescribe to bring vitamin D levels to 50nmol.

Some areas will prescribe to bring levels to 75nmol or even 80nmol

leedsformulary.nhs.uk/docs/...

GP should advise on self supplementing if over 50nmol, but under 75nmol (but they rarely do)

mm.wirral.nhs.uk/document_u...

But with Hashimoto’s, improving to around 80nmol or 100nmol by self supplementing may be better

pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/218...

vitamindsociety.org/pdf/Vit...

Once you Improve level, very likely you will need on going maintenance dose to keep it there.

Test twice yearly when supplementing

Can test via NHS private testing service

Vitamin D mouth spray by Better You is very effective as it avoids poor gut function.

There’s a version made that also contains vitamin K2 Mk7.

One spray = 1000iu

It’s trial and error what dose we need, with thyroid issues we frequently need higher dose than average

B12 is absolutely terrible

Active B12 below 70 is considered suspect yours is right at bottom of range

GP won’t understand an Active B12 test (it’s not available on NHS)

Request GP test B12, folate and ferritin NOW

And coeliac blood test too

You are clearly hypothyroid. You need to take more vitamin D than 1000iu, more like 4000iu. Your B12 is also too low. Push for your GP to prescribe some levo for you. I cant see the ferritin.

Sorry it missed my ferritin. See below

FERRITIN

43.3 (30 - 264)

Ferritin is too low

are you vegetarian or vegan

Request GP do FULL iron panel test for anaemia including ferritin

Never supplement iron without doing full iron panel test for anaemia first and retest 3-4 times a year if self supplementing.

It’s possible to have low ferritin but high iron

Test early morning, only water to drink between waking and test. Avoid high iron rich dinner night before test

Medichecks iron panel test

medichecks.com/products/iro...

Look at increasing iron rich foods in diet

Eating iron rich foods like liver or liver pate once a week plus other red meat, pumpkin seeds and dark chocolate, plus daily orange juice or other vitamin C rich drink can help improve iron absorption

This is interesting because I have noticed that many patients with Hashimoto’s disease and hypothyroidism, start to feel worse when their ferritin drops below 80 and usually there is hair loss when it drops below 50.

It’s like banging your head against a wall Hidden I’ve been told it’s my age, depression, nothing to worry about. They were advised to give me another test in June as it looks like I may become hypothyroid 😡

You are hypothyroid

Being hypothyroid results in low stomach acid and poor nutrient absorption

Low vitamin are direct result

High thyroid antibodies confirms cause is autoimmune thyroid disease
