I went to the doctor with worries about Levo dosage … currently on 50 divided so 2x25 morn and eve. I was wanting full thyroid blood test as feeling sluggish and cold with inflammation and few other niggles.

The doc agreed to blood test - it’s been many months since last - and I had asked for a full test … what I got was this … sufficient information?

Serum TSH level:

Normal range:

2.50 mU/L

0.30 to

4.20

Not really... enough to know that you need a dose increase, unless you weigh less than 50kg a 50mcg dose would be for the first 8 weeks and then a retest and an increase until you are on a fully replacing dose

TSH needs to be around 1, request an increase to 75mcg and retest in 8 weeks 🤗

Looking back at your previous posts you have been guided to get an increase in the past, is there an issue with your GP?

Well, I did ask for an increase this time. He suggested this blood test before agreeing and, as it appears normal, case closed as far as the clinic is concerned. I also asked if I could be referred to the hospital and pursue this under an endocrinologist… he suggested that if blood results were normal then that couldn’t happen.

A TSH test alone doesn't tell him or you anything much.... get yourself a full thyroid panel taken before 9am nothing but water before and 24 hours after last T4 and come back with your results.

As thyroid patients we do need to become our own health advocates with GP’s and Endocrinologists. They get little training in how to make us feel well, instead relying on lab numbers on paper.

Take some time to read up on your condition, learn and get your confidence up. This will stand you in good stead when discussing your condition and challenging things that  medic say. Take printed medical papers with you evidencing what you are asking for, and also take someone along with you if you feel it would help.

If at first you don't succeed, try, try, try again. Keep trying different doctors at the same practice. You will need to be assertive but nice about it.

Test early morning, ideally just before 9am, only drink water between waking and test and last dose levothyroxine 24 hours before test

This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip)
