Blood test abbreviations

Hello,

My daughter’s received blood test forms from the hospital in advance of an appointment with an endocrinologist (her first) and we’re just wondering what the abbreviation AVD on one of the forms could be. We’ve googled, none the wiser.

Anybody familiar with it?

Thanks

No idea on that but googling can scare you!

Are they testing for anything else or just the thyroid? Normally it says stuff like TSH, T3, T4 and then antibodies etc may be tested too but don't worry they may need to test all at the start just what they need.....so an extra abbreviation is actually a good thing at least they are being more thorough!

Hello, yes, all the usual / familiar tests. It’s just the AVD threw us….

It doesn’t look like a typical abbreviation used in blood tests. It could be an internal code the lab uses. Can you share a picture of it in context?

I wondered about that too, here’s a photo. Could it be vitamin D? I’m not exactly concerned, more curious.

Thanks

The lab manual is online - at least the 2017 version is!

No help at all. Unless it is (adequate vitamin D) - but that would be very odd as no-one else seems to use that abbreviation.

Ring or email and ask?

Thorough as ever, thanks helvella! I’ll ask my daughter to email the secretary, she turned 18 last week and overnight became a responsible adult 🙃

(My daughter, that is…..I have no interest in speculating about the age of the endo’s secretary!)

we are a curious bunch

I’m going to go with it being an internal abbreviation!

…..indeed we are! We haven’t got this far by accepting stuff at face value, have we?

All i can think is related to the heart - AV being atrial ventrical as in AV block! Do let us know:)

Oh yes, perhaps. I’ll let you know!

Aortic valve disease possibly but I would associate that with older people..I know anyone can get anything but unless the daughter is unwell I doubt that would be it.

Yeah, I agree. There’s nothing wrong with her heart, or any reason to test it. It’s either an internal abbreviation or even an error. We’re planning to get the blood drawn on Wednesday, we’ll ask the phlebotomist about it then. Thanks for responding 👍
