Can anyone tell me what a high amount of this protein means - range listed 40 - mine is 1621 !
Thyroglobulin : Can anyone tell me what a high... - Thyroid UK
Thyroglobulin
Hi posthinking
It's one of the antibodies produced as a result of active Hashimoto's. I had a quick gander at you past posts and noted you have had high TPO antibodies too in the past.
Have you got any recent blood test results with ranges to put into context? And IMPORTANTLY how are you feeling. Have you been poorly or is something else flared up? I noticed you are also on the lupus support group too.
Not necessarily.
Both thyroglobulin and thyroglobulin antibodies can be tested.

Hi both replies - I had over 7000 I think they were TPO antibodies- now thyroid burned out and noticed this result from 2022 when TPO ab’s dropped from 1,000 to 50 and was assumed the autoimmune response against thyroid has ceased - but …… saw this today on the system and didn’t connect this is a different antibody and can be linked to thyroid cancer - awaiting 24 Jan an up to date result - I have been losing weight 34 pounds rapidly so bit concerned now I have seen the lab description as to why test is asked for - I suspect celiac and am now GF.
Yes have had issues but feel very well gluten free had tried GF years ago and didn’t agree with me - but had bowel issues last August all tests so far showing all ok apart from waiting for endoscopy to do biopsy for celiac - I am loving the automatic weight loss as went from 8.5 stone to 16 stones when thyroid went out and nothing would shift it !
You should not go gf till the endoscopy results. You could get a false negative
Yes i know and I have to go back to gluten for two weeks before procedure- not looking forward to that !
It's usually 6 weeks for the gluten challenge as per Coeliac uk
Have you had an ultra sound of your thyroid? From what I understand nodules can come with high thyroglobulin. Or do you have high TgAb? Anyway, I found this research paper: ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articl...
"Thyroid nodules are usually accompanied by elevated thyroglobulin (Tg) level and autoimmune thyroid diseases (AITDs). However, the relationship between Tg and AITDs is not fully understood. Dysfunction of regulatory T cells (Tregs) plays an important role in the development of AITDs."
Hope that helps and that nothing more serious is afoot.
Thank you for kind time in trying to help - I did have an ultrasound of my thyroid last year and it was shown it had atrophied - but think I might have celiac disease but failed a confirmatory blood test - only way now is biopsy via endoscopy- I am going to query the high results for this antibody in case it means something other than hashi’s which I have.
I'm relieved to see that it's high antibodies and not high thyroglobulin. That is most likely less serious and somewhat common for hashi's. Will you have the endoscopy, then, to see if you have celiac? I had the antibodies for celiac and declined the endoscopy, but I was going to start a gf diet anyway, since it also seems to be beneficial for some people with hashi's. I wish you all the best.
Celiac testing is a joke. My daughter & I both have it & number of neg tests were obscene. V few medics use good ones. Her German specialist is excellent, the nhs is trying to kill me. I have ord & she had thyroid cancer age 20.
I agree so sorry to hear you having trouble - I have lost 37 lbs in weight and failed blood test but hopefully endoscopy will find the antibodies via a biopsy - problem I now have is - I think I am malabsorbing my thyroid meds and steroids for Addisons - the forums for Cealiac knew meds could be lost via malabsorption but my Drs didn’t know !
