HiI had a ferritin test in November and posted my results here and got some help.
My result then was low at 10.2ug/l
I have since persuaded the doctor to do further tests for iron. Unfortunately she did not repeat ferritin but did an iron study results as follows
Serum iron level 19 umol/L [9.0 - 30.4]
Serum transferrin level 2.85 g/L [2.5 - 3.8]
Transferrin saturation index 27.2 % [15.0 - 50.0]
I wanted to find out the cause of the low iron. I don't know if the above results are OK for iron. The doctor was investigating coeliac disease as a cause for my low ferritin but the antibody test was negative.
I am now going gluten free had been trying lower gluten in the past.
I have PA and Hashimotos. I am self treating NDT.
Could anyone help please with above results and what would my next steps be.
I do have a referral to haematology but it is only a telephone appointment.
These results are already marked satisfactory at the gp surgery but I want to know why my ferritin result is so low. I'm not feeling that well mainly sleep issues.
Thanks

I usually post this link (below) but that doesn't tell you what to do - just provides some background information which I hope is relevant and might be helpful.
Are you vegan or vegetarian?
Phytate and tannic acids in other foods can impair iron absorption.
Has anyone checked for internal bleeding?

This is a summary of what I have read up and found out about iron supplements over the past few years. I am not in any way medically trained. You are strongly encouraged to check every detail before making any decisions for yourself.
Hi helvellynThanks for replying. No I am not vegan or vegetarian. I have been trying to raise my ferritin for years now above these low levels.
This is the first time a gp has agreed to do an iron study. Do the results of that look normal.
I have been on different iron supplements over the years too but some of them upset my stomach.
I've not been checked for internal bleeding except I had an endoscopy about 6 years ago I think which was normal. The doctor recently checked for bowel cancer which I didn't think was the cause anyway.
I suppose I could still have coeliac disease with a negative test. Is there tannic acid in coffee I have reduced that to one cup a day in the morning.
