Fair Use - Looking for tips for Safe sharing of info one finds on the net to others.

Hi

I’m seeing my GP in 3 weeks time about a topic I would appreciate her thoughts on.

I would like to copy and paste and send her a paragraph each from 5 articles regarding the topic I’ve found on the net before the appt.

I will acknowledge the authors and publishers and say ‘this is for your information only’

I note some web content is Free Access, but others I’m not sure.

My nephew says you can copy and paste and send on to someone else anything you find in the net, as long as you acknowledge the author and publisher. And, it is not for commercial use.

What are your thoughts on this please?

Thanks

Persevere

Hi! I’m not a lawyer, and I’m not in the Uk, but In usual practice your nephew is 100% correct. Kids know these things : )

If the content is free to access through a link - you can absolutely paste a portion into the email, and paste the link as the citation.

I hope that helps, and that the US way works the same in the UK!

The question here is whether or not you'll infringe on the copyright laws by copying and pasting. And the simple answer is no, you won't. As long as you aren't publishing the piece in an article/blog/website of your own without giving credit to the author, you'll be fine.

I'm not in the U.K. (in the U.S.), but I am a professional writer who deals with this question a lot. I hope this helps.

Yes, that’s so helpful rileyroof!

I of course will acknowledge the source and author

I plan on copying and pasting anything from 2 to 20 lines from each relevant source I find and pass on to my GP

Thanks again

As long as you are not publishing the content on any platforms or in the public domain you are fine.

Thanks garbo61

I’m just passing on stuff from the net on a particular topic that I would like to discuss with her, for her to read before I see her.
