Tinitus/ Ringing in ears

Is there a link between tinitus and thyriod conditions please? Anyone have experience of this. Google tells me there is a link. Never had this before in my life, started 5 days ago a high pitched ringing in my ears driving me crazy.

Actually booked for a thyriod scan tomorrow which my gp referred for me in September, going to book an emergency gp appt in the morning too.

As per my bio I probably have Hashimotos due to high antibody numbers but gp won't give it a name. No thyriod meds yet as my range is within what the nhs say is "normal ". I know that's different from optimal.

Trying hard to be healthy take D3 and iron which is prescribed. Also a probiotic.

Also my crazy face swellings which I've posted about before have also flared up this week. I take constant fexofenadine for that. TIA. Fiona

when were folate and B12 last tested

What vitamin supplements are you taking

Tinnitus often linked to low B vitamins especially B12

Agreed. My tinnitus went away when I started to deal with my B12 deficiency.

Fee52 I used to have pulsatile tinnitus. It went away once I got some T3 to take with my levothyroxine. Tinnitus is very unpleasant and I also used to get palpitations , T3 saw them off too. I have Hashi,s and believe there is a link with the tinnitus and palpitations. Having to wait for your TSH to go higher is beyond cruel and so many docs think antibodies are irrelevant.😪

I developed tinnitus & hearing loss when thyroid started getting worse. Realised in hindsight, of course.

My diagnosis for hypothyroidism came after l initially went to see nurse to check my ears (l was struggling with hearing and buzzing) and for a well woman checkup. After 6 months repeated blood tests my GP told me hearing loss and tinnitus were a possible symptom of my thyroid when l was diagnosed.

Hi I've suffered tinintus for over ten years worse in an evening. Been to hospital to a management of tinintus & I'm coping although tis the 1st thing I'd like cured. Unfortunately there seems to be no treatment not sure if taking T3 will help it to improve it. Good luck with managing it & make sure you're taking supplements to help to get to optimal levels.

Oestrogen receptors in your ears suffer when levels drop much like low thyroid levels

😲I didn't know that🤦 so around the time of my menopause makes sense now, another piece of the jigsaw👍

I acquired pulsatile tinnitus when I got to 75mcg levo about 18 months ago. I am now on 100mcg with no let up. I hate it and if it was not for the CPAP machine I use at night, I think I would get no sleep at all. It kind of helps sound it out. I sense my ear channels are a bit swollen and certainly very dry, those symptoms themselves are very hypo symptoms. If I am not distracted at all times, I hear it. It’s very wearing. However I am far from optimally medicated. I still have all my hypo symptoms that I had at the start of this journey about three years ago. Other than my fatigue is better and mostly I put that down to doubling my Vit D. Very short and quickly terminated acquaintances with T3 seem to have helped my brain lift from much of the brain fog/confusion/depression. I just wish I could stay on the T3 without experiencing heart symptoms!

hi just sharing my journey with the constant high/low buzzing I’ve had for over 20 years, also ear ache in right ear almost constant and repeated ear infections. Had a brain scan 2 years ago but it came back clear and normal. Only been on levo 6 years so I don’t know if it’s related to thyroid or if something eles is going on, it gets you down I know and sympathise with you I hope you find something to help, I’m looking into natural therapies as Drs haven’t helped me. I wish you well x

I developed tinnitus after my Levo was reduced from 125mcg to 75mcg in one go. It has not left me even after the dose was increased again. It is now permanent. Nothing was ever done to counter it. At the time I trusted doctors 200%, no questions asked, following orders to the t and never looking at any test results or being informed much about my condition. That's why I can not say for sure that the lower dose of Levo was solely responsible or whether there were any other influences, like low vitamin levels (secondary to hypo?), at work. One has to be on one's toes all the time to make sure everything is as it should be as much as possible. I hope you can lose the tinnitus fast again. It can be very annoying to say the least. In my opinion, the longer the tinnitus hangs around the lower the chances of getting rid of it. Your brain starts to perceive it as normal and won't let it go. As an aside, in my case the tinnitus gets especially bad when Levo dose gets lowered even a bit, but also when physically or emotionally stressed. My advice would be to do all you possibly can to get rid of it immediately if possible. People have successfully tried different things. Collect as much info about tinnitus as you can as fast as you can. Best of luck. I hope you find a way to eradicate the tinnitus.
