You're not over-medicated. Your FT3 isn't even mid-range. So, you osteoporosis has nothing to do with your thyroid. I doubt it was lack of calcium, either. Calcium is neither a treatment nor a preventative for osteoporosis. And excess calcium just makes the bones brittle. Did you take magnesium with your vit D? Those are the two most important nutrients for bones. And they work together, so need to be taken together. Most people are deficient in magnesium and taking vit D without it will deplete your magnesium even further.
Ooh 😕 I'm at the osteopenia stage and have started using this... bonebalance.co.uk/
No idea if it's helping but thought I'd give it a year and get rescanned as the NHS aren't interested in prevention 🙄
I like you take all the supplements... if your GP wants to reduce your dose just refuse or you could say you had taken biotin supplements before the test so a retest is required before you could possibly agree to a reduction 😉 Your fT3 is just under 50%... it would be interesting to see where your fT4 is after 24 hours doesn't look like you are converting very well.... how are your other levels? Folate, Ferritin, B12, Vit D
I was diagnosed with osteopenia in 2008. Previous scan to latest one was 2013 and was osteopenia then. In the last 10 years it has obviously changed.
Folate 7.1 (3.0 - 20.0)
Ferritin 88 (13 - 150)
Vit B12 390 (197 -771)
I do all the right things, do not smoke/drink. Eat a balanced diet, do weight bearing exercises (dog walking every day), personal training at the gym. Unfortunately my father broke a hip when he was around 63 so I suspect this may have relevance.
Interestingly none of my girlfriends have ever been offered or had a bone scan. I wonder how many middle aged women do have osteoporosis without knowing it.
I was one of those middle aged women that had no idea that I had osteoporosis; only found out a few months ago. Even when I broke a limb during lockdown no DEXA scan was ever suggested. It was only when I eventually got an endo referral when a scan was then suggested.
But I was told by my endo surgeon my bone scan results was fine and by endo nurse and two gp's! It was only when I had a post thyroidectomy appointment that the endo at a different clinic said what are you doing about your osteopenia? I've since discovered I actually have osteoporosis. I was very shocked by this as it was unexpected. Think I may have had it since I was very deficient in vitamin D many years ago.
I'd advise for anyone getting a DEXA scan make sure to get printed copies or the results of any scans printed out for you. Also get more than one clinician to look at and interpret the results. It's the same as getting your blood test results. Mistakes are sometimes made.
How shocking for you. Thank goodness you eventually had the diagnosis. Are you on any medication? I would like to get a second opinion but not sure how, unless GP is prepared to help.
I do think there are many middle aged women who have osteoporosis and don’t know it.
I had to self refer as I wouldn't be offered one for another 5 years at least, as like you I don't drink, don't smoke, walk miles... I love the way they just add Osteopenia - age related... No action! 🤬
Looks like you would benefit from a slightly higher dose of B Vits to push you over the mid point 🤗
I agree with greygoose that you are not overmedicated, so I hope your GP doesn't try to alter your dose.
The standard medications for osteoporosis can have bad side effects for some people, whereas others are fine on them. However there are more natural ways of treating it if you prefer that route. The sites Save Our Bones and Better Bones have some excellent information and articles, and if you are on Facebook there's a very good group called Osteoporosis UK Friendly Support and Natural Options.
I'd agree with Eeyore that your B12 may be a bit low. That level is symptomatic-low for me. And for good bones you need to keep homocysteine low, so B12, B9, B6, magnesium. You also need taurine and that is B12 dependent.
Those both look ok to me, but if you've been using them for a while and are still only in the 300s then perhaps try using more of the B12 (not the B complex). I spread my doses through the day and use all three of these forms but in much higher amounts (about 9000mcg daily) . Even two a day, or three, of the B12 might be enough for you to get a benefit. (You can't overdose on B12, although some do better with one form or another. I tend to take more hydroxo as sublingual so that I don't get too much methyl. I use Cytoplan, who do a 1000mcg hydroxo and a 500/500mcg adenosyl/methyl) Is your vit D3/K2 prescribed? Might be worth checking your D levels if not done recently, just to make sure that you are at a good level. This one is a reliable at home test, if you need to do your own vitamindtest.org.uk/ Ideally check your homocysteine to make sure those B vits are doing the job, but not so easy to get done. Food for the Brain are advertising starting to offer an at home test in January, but not sure if it will happen or how reliable. foodforthebrain.org/tests/
That D is really not too good although I like Better You and use their magnesium oil spray. I use Nature's Answer Vit D3 drops in olive oil and found they worked well for me when tablets didn't. I aim for approx 100 (-125!) nmol serum. I use separate K2 so I can adjust the amounts I'm using. Maybe try another brand or form of D3, take a bit more (is yours the 3000iu?) - perhaps get the oil drops and try 4000iu over the winter and check again in March/April to try to get a feel for how well you are absorbing. We all vary enormously on that. If you only started the Better You after the test in August and were on less or none before, then by now you could be much higher so might be better to retest.
Thanks for your comment, bookish. My D3 level actually dropped on a substantial dose of Better You D3 spray, although I know many get on with it. May I ask which K2 you take?
Hi, I use Metabolics K2 metabolics.com/vitamin-k2-p... because I am totally grain free and this one suits me. I take one every other day now, although to start with (when I was taking a larger dose of D3) I took one a day. Not cheap, and I'm sure there are other good ones. I use a lot of Lamberts products and I'm sure they will do one. Interesting that serum level dropped. I wonder whether perhaps it was in a form that you were using, rather than just building up, or maybe you didn't have sufficient co-factors. Magnesium is very important for Vit D metabolism and activation. Did anything else change at the same time, illness/covid/stress/diet/medications/time of year etc
It was quite a while ago, but I don't think there were any other changes at the time. In fact, it was summer, IIRC, and the drop surprised me. So I'm careful to test twice a year and not assume anything. I've taken magnesium for ages. Since then I've been taking Quicksilver Scientific D3/K2. It's liposomal and it's been very effective, but expensive, so I'm interested in other possibilities. For now I'll stay with QS. Thanks.
