Hello! I’m experiencing some symptoms and don’t really know if they’re related to hypo or hyper. I have: really bad hair loss, weight gain, tiredness. Does anyone have the list of symptoms for both hypo and hyper? Just for reference I’m taking Thyroid S and latest test results were FT3 5.4 (3.1-6.8), FT4 16.6 (12-22), TSH <0.01.

Hypothyroidism symptoms list
Symptoms can be the same for undermedicated and overmedicated, hypo or hyper. The lists you see on the internet are very clearcut but in reality the symptoms just tell you something is out of kilter and you need to look at blood results to see which way they are out So are your blood results usual for you? Where do your ft4 and ft3 normally sit? Do you monitor yourself in any other way such as temperature or resting heart rate?
My values are usually around the upper range, but I don’t feel great when they’re above the range. I know that it’s not easy to identify if the symptoms come from being hyper or hypo but I do see on the list a couple that are under hypo that I’m experiencing, such as headaches and constipation. I don’t usually monitor my temperature or pulse but will start doing so.
When I am undermedicated hypo I lose weight and my resting heart rate increases. These were also symptoms when I was hyper before RAI. This is why I feel we need to know our body and keep records of our bloods. I don't monitor my temperature but I do my resting heart rate which is 68 to 70 when things are ok and 76 to 82 when things are wrong.
ESSENTIAL to test vitamin D, folate, B12 and ferritin
Low iron/ferritin strongly linked to hair loss
10 months ago you had very low ferritin
healthunlocked.com/thyroidu...
Obviously you need to retest
Hey there again :
What were the results of the blood test you ran a month ago and how did they compare to the previous blood test and the last blood test you ran when on synthetics ?
The hair loss may well be associated with your low ferriin - please run a new test asap - and the weight gain and tiredness suggest a slowed metabolism and likely undermedicated :
No thyroid hormone replacement works well until ferritin is at least over 70 -
I now aim for a ferritin of 100 : folate around 20 : active B12 75 ++ ( serum B12 500 ++ ) and vitamin D around 100 :
Are you tracking yourself on your body temperature, pulse and blood pressure - has there been any movement in these physical symptoms ?
I’ve been taking supplements for iron, B complex and folate, so would expect those to have increased. I will retest soon. I don’t usually track temperature and pulse, but will start doing so. I do feel cold most of the time.
Can you share yor blood test results and ranges - do you have online access ?
I’ll post them once I have them. I actually have a kit for iron, folate and B12 check so will do it this week.
I have the following:
Folate 29.2 (range 8.83-45)
Active B12 85.9 (37.5-188)
Ferritin 34.7 (30-150)
I realise that the ferritin is kind of low, not sure why the iron supplements are not helping that much.
As for D3, I’ve always had it around 110, I’m taking supplements along with calcium (due to low PTH).
I aim for a folate around 20 - Active B12 75 ++ - around 100 ( serum B12 500 ++ ) and vitamin D around 100 :
How long have you been supplementing iron - and what was your previous result ?
Has a full iron panel been run and internal investigations given the ' all clear ' and nothing untoward found ?
Maybe consider increasing the supplement - what are you taking daily ?
I’m taking ferrous bisglycinate, 28 mg, along with a vitamin C supplement. I’ve never done a full iron panel and my GP hasn’t recommended one when my iron came out low a few years ago.
From memory I had just turned 70 which may make a difference as to what happens next - and I had to have an endoscopy and colonoscopy before being prescribed 3x 322 mg Ferrous Fumerate daily :
My ferritin was down at 22 - in the range - but under 30 which I think is when the NHS are obliged to do something other than write a prescription - irrespective of age.
I couldn't tolerate these tablets and wasn't offered an alternative so started self medicating.
So anyway - your dose looks very low and likely why your levels hasn't improved -
It took me a good 3 months to tip over 45 - but I was starting to feel stronger with a bit more stamina - so just kept going and around a year later I was around 90 and much improved.
