Why were you referred?
I got referred some years ago when I quit dairy and was having digestive issues. For me it didn't help at all and all they wanted me to do was eat more carbs which I knew was going to make me worse.
I did see another one some years after that and did the low FODMAP diet which helped. Personally I found a nutritionist better.
GP referred due to low zinc...
Did your GP offer any supplements or advice? Sounds to me like they were a bit stumped and thought a dietician a good fit.
Up zinc rich foods and add a supplement. Retest in 3-4 months.
She didn't have a clue, said she'd never tested zinc... I've asked for a second opinion as someone there must have a scooby else why did they run the test 🙄
You might get lucky but likely not high on their priority list and it was you who asked for the test.
Other than low histmaine how is your diet? Do you eat mostly fresh whole foods?

Yep I'm low histamine, no barley, dairy or nightshades all fresh and organic except the digestive biscuits to get over the sugar crashes (they put barley in the tasty organic ones 😩)
Typical NHS really but you did at least get it tested.
Is barley the only gluten you have excluded? I forget if you have Hashi's or not but may well be worth trialling a strictly gluten free diet. Makes eating a bit complicated to start with but well worth it.
Did you discover nightshades yourself or was that from your intolerance test? I'm still wondering if I should do that.
I've got Hashi's (Ord's) tried gluten free and some of the gluten free stuff is much worse like amaranth and buckwheat, thy also put a lot of potato starch in anything GF... the intolerance test really helped to find the individual culprits, I'm fine with gluten but not barley, the nightshades I'd worked out for myself along with dairy (casein and lactose) it's the histamine that throws in a real curveball
I often think that about doctors: why do they test all this stuff if they haven't got a clue about what the results mean? What's more, they tend to test all the wrong stuff and ignore the really important, like T3 and antibodies. But, I think they just want to look like they're doing something, and chose the least expensive tests, crossing their fingers that the results will be somewhere within the range so they don't have to actually do anything!
Are you aware that wheat is high histamine? Just saying.
No... where did you hear that? Maybe an issue for Mast Cell?
I think it's the bran that can cause an issue, white wheat flour is low in amines so unlikely to release histamine or create a trigger, so white bread is safer than wholemeal just not as tasty 🙃

I've read it in several places. There is a lot of conflicting information about what is low histamine and what is not. Its really down to the individual to do an elimination diet to work out what works for you.

All I know is that what I've seen of NHS dietetics recommendations in rehabilitation programmes for various conditions is horrifying. Saw a long COVID booklet that had meal and snack suggestions consisting of about 90% dairy and wheat and ultra-processed foods. It's nuts. Mainstream dietetics tends to focus on macro nutrients without attention to holistic food qualities or gut issues apart from low FODMAP. My guess is you already know a lot more about how to manage your diet with hypothyroidism than they will, but maybe you'd get an outlier who is clued up.

I saw a dietician once as I've had historic issues with iron, folate and B12. She joked about her weight saying she was the fat dietician, but it did make me wonder about whether she was advising patients about being obese and how to lose weight.
I saw a fat dietician once - she was fatter than me. I didn't find the appointment helpful, and despite being a fatty herself she was very judgemental about me.
My SIL once saw a locum GPabout an ear infection which was quickly diagnosed. The GP then lectured her about her weight ( she is a bit plump but not obese). My SIL said this locum was massive,much bigger than she herself was. Seems self awareness passes some of us by. Not sure I would have been so self restrained.
Oh I’d love to know how this goes… bets for how it is. I reckon it’ll be like a spoof, 1 point for every correct recommendation please and I haven’t cheated by looking at the NHS website first!

The carbs are just awful. I'd be ill with that percentage of carbs in my diet. Not least, bread and pasta are ultra processed foods, at least the ones most people can afford are, also breakfast cereals.
They need quite the update on what is healthy and also to accept that one size doesn't fit all.
Interesting isn't it... I eat porridge most days or as a go to 'safe meal' if I just can't face anything else and homemade sourdough without issue.... occasionally make pasta or noodles which are more to my liking but I hate having to clean up the mess I make doing it 🫤
I'm back on a 'clean up my diet' phase at the moment. Lots of things have slipped in that really shouldn't be there and won't help me, including coffee.
A while back I made a lot of treat type foods as you get more variety that way and I need to revisit that place now.

Believe me I have tried many things diet wise and totally get where dfc is coming from! This time I'll settle for reduced inflammatory foods (because they have slipped back in) . I don't think I can stop coffee forever so maybe just a few times a week as a treat and green tea otherwise.
My CRP was up at 18 I think it was last blood test. 🫠

At the moment I have either Ionic Zinc 15mg, Zinc picolinate 30mg and I stick a couple of patches on for good measure 😆
I do think so tbf! I am big into freeze dried organs and meats. Oysters are nutritional giants for zinc, I vote bioavailability of real food (even if desiccated) > supplements every day! But yes… bottom feeders is not appetizing … but I used to be fanatic enough to neck smoothies made up of raw beef liver, raw milk, egg yolks and beef blood so a bit of dried oyster is like a treat to me 😅

I had a look & was impressed by the concentrated oysters but then I remembered iodine & oysters are very high in iodine. I’m not sure I would want to boost my iodine levels without testing first. After all we already get iodine in our thyroid hormone tablets.

I think they have to be kept in clean, filtered water for at least 24 hours if they’re for human consumption so they should get rid of any bacteria but the minerals will still be there. I think eating them in such a concentrated form might upset the body’s mineral levels.
Re cadmium , I have highish levels as I like eating dark chocolate as a treat. Everything seems to come at a cost!
After flicking through the comments, I agree with the general consensus on dieticians. Of course, if the patient issue is diet/nutrition related - and numerous health conditions can be prevented or eased with improved nutrition - then referrals are needed as docs are untrained & unqualified in that (despite a growing number offering that service nowadays!).
But why dont they refer to qualified Nutritional Therapists instead - particularly when many (including myself and some in this thread) have bad experiences with dieticians?. I believe it's because fees are received for referrals "inside the system" (1st link below) and dieticians are inside that system whereas NTs don't want to be. And we know dietician bodies are dodgy anyhow (link 2). Of course, in at least some cases, I may be doing the docs a disservice and they may sometimes refer to dieticians for "convenience" reasons (1st link) - which is almost as bad!
That looks very like an appointment I received from ENT a few months ago I was given June 3rd 2023 - but it was plastered with This is not an appointment - do not attend’ it said somewhere that it was a ‘holding appointment’ or something like that to get me into the system but not to attend or phone etc.
A couple of weeks ago I got a message on my chart with a questionnaire to fill in - basically did I still want an appointment and on it was a list of distances I was prepared to travel to be seen 0-50 miles, 50-100 miles, there were more distances I could have travelled - think they were all in the U.K. otherwise I could have combined a jaunt to somewhere exotic with my treatment but I reckoned 0-50 miles was far enough so I chose 0-50 miles and haven’t heard any more since ! Be interesting to see what happens. Bet you get the same questionnaire I got in a few weeks.

I think mine came from the hospital- I did get something from the GP partnership to say they were referring me - the audiologist wrote to my GP - anyway the GPs referred me and I got the ‘fake’ appointment, then must have been a couple of months later I got the one asking if I still wanted to see them. As if anyone is going to change their mind. I expect it will be a while before I finally get an appointment though.
