Hashimotos and distal polyneuropathy/ Allodynia

Hi guys

I have been hassling my doctor to find out why I am suffering terribly with neuropathy in my toes/balls of feet and. Intense nerve pain on slightest touch to some body parts. She ran full bloods all that was abnormal was my thyroid levels, triglycerides and cholesterol. I have every symptom of diabetes type 2 but only a hb1ac of 5.8 (updated)

Also strangely both my big toenails have come off and a couple of little ones?

Doc says it’s down to my thyroid, no investigation nothing, and it’s getting worse and going up my feet. She gave me gabapentin and statins that I’ve not taken yet,

Has anyone else ever heard of this with Thyroid? I’m on T3 only 20mcg x2 daily and my thyroid results are still abnormal.

Any advice if this is common or could be something else ?

Thank you in advance

Dexterpuppy 'Doc says it’s down to my thyroid, triglycerides and cholesterol.'

She may well be right. Both polyneuropathy and Allodynia can be symptoms of thyroid hormone imbalance. Also hypothyroidism is a known cause of high cholesterol.

'T3 only 20mcg x2 daily and my thyroid results are still abnormal.'

It may be that your body actually needs some T4. Can you post your most recent thyroid test results, i.e. TSH, FT4 and FT3. That will enable members to get a better picture of your situation.

Your TSH is far too high. When did you last take T3 before this test?

It looks like you need an increase to me. 40mcgs T3 is a relatively low dose.

Of course they haven't even tested your FT3.

Hypo people here do need to supplement key vitamin levels to get them to OPTIMAL. This helps our thyroid hormone work well.

Vitamin D should be around 100 - 150. Buy one that includes vit K2 to help it go to your bones. Some are available in oil or you can take it with an oily meal for better absorption. Use this calculator to work out how much to take to get your level to 100-150. wildatlantichealth.com/vita...

Folate - aim for a level of 20. Recommend taking an active/methyl (should say on label) B complex which contains 400mcgs folate (also B12). This B complex has all the right vitamins at a not unreasonable cost for 90 days supply. amazon.co.uk/Liposomal-Soft...

No result for ferritin.

I would hold off on the Omeprazole as you need a dose increase which will help. Might be better to try a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar (must contain the mother - see label) in water before your main meal. Hypo's get LOW stomach acid, not high!

No wonder your results are abnormal. When testing we are looking to see stable blood levels of T3 and to do that you need to split your dose during the 24 hours prior to the test and take the last dose 8-12 hours before the blood test. So the results you have there are a false low and I'd recommend retesting as I have suggested.

oh really? I have another appointment on Friday so I will ask to retest. This was a fasting one

Yes really. No point testing after 24 hours never mind 48hrs. Test as I recommended above and then repost new results which will be accurate for an assessment.

sounds like you’re under medicated perhaps? I’d get t3 and t4 tested

Have you had your B12 checked ? I have neuropathy from lower calf into both feet. I inject B12 weekly and take a good B Complex. Also taking VitD - lots. So B12 - Folate - Ferritin - VitD need testing with optimal tesults.

Dexterpuppy in reply toMarz

hi Marz yes I have it was in normal range. My ferritin folate and vit D were on the low side x

Hypo people need OPTIMAL levels of ferritin, folate, B12 & D3 for their thyroid hormone to work well.

What were the vitamin results with ranges?

Also what were your latest thyroid results and when did you take your last dose of T3 before they were taken?

Do you have the actual results with ranges ? The range is wide - too wide. Was your B12 over 500 ? Which supplements do you take and how much ? Are you taking a PPI for stomach acid ?

hi Marz

I’ll write them all down in a min and given omeprazole but not taken yet x

The symptoms of low and high acid levels are often similar. Hypos usually have LOW acid ....

thank you x

This is the ones I have from doctor

Folate would be better in double figures or mid-range. VitD TOO low.

TSH too high and FT4 too Low. You also need T3 and anti-bodies testing for the complete picture. What has your Dr said about your tesults ?

Sorry I know I have asked before - which supplements are you taking and how much....
