Excercising with hypothyroidism

I have been feeling good with my levo + cytomel. I think I have found the right dosage for me. But a few weeks ago I started to workout again and I feel off afterwards. I need to get some new blood results next month but does anyone know if our ft4 /ft3 lowers when we workout? Maybe I just need a little extra of levo or cytomel? Or both..

Did you see this reply to your last post? healthunlocked.com/thyroidu...

Maybe you need to tweak your meds a little but new blood results would help.

Thank you Jaydee, i will try to get a new test soon. I tried to increase my T3 but it made me very emotional and exhausted.

You would need to drop your Levo before adding anymore t3.

How are your vitamins looking?

It’s always advisable to recheck thyroid levels and key vitamins (and post results on the forum) before adjusting medication. I’ve found it helpful to split my Liothyronine dose, as these seems to give me more energy to exercise. However, others feel best when thyroid medication is taken in a single dose. It’s very much trial and error to find what suits you best.

You burn more thyroid when you work out and need to replace it as you go. You burn more in winter or when you are out in cold wind all day. I take NDT but its the same as what you are doing by taking Levo + cytomel. Just experiment on yourself - basically fine tune the dose. It wont be much. 25mcg Levo or so. Dont take it every day just the days you workout.

post with links to 3 studies on the effect of acute exercise on thyroid hormone levels: healthunlocked.com/thyroidu.... after-a-run-ft4-ft3-go-up-from-your-normal.-but-12-hours-later-ft4-ft3-will-have-gone-down-below-your-normal-. cortisol-affected-too.

This study is really, really interesting, thank you Tattybogle. I'm a yoga teacher, though pretty well retired now, and definitely needed more T3 on days when I was teaching classes. My energy levels still 'fall' after either prolonged or intense exercise. I wonder if there is a link here with ME/PFS/CFS? I was diagnosed with ME and realised with the help of a clinic that although I feel okay while exercising and often afterwards, the next day I would feel dreadful, which fits with study of effects on T3 of exercise.

Have you ever been given a chart to fill in, in different colours, showing how you feel energy wise through the day, divided into something like half-hours? It's brilliant. In the group I was in some discovered it was ironing that caused the fall in energy, others cycling, for me it's chatting with friends and vacuuming - far more debilitating than going out for a good walk. One lady discovered watching TV was worst for her, the next day she was always much worse than if she didn't watch TV, even though she thought it was a good way to relax. It was really helpful.

I take T4 liquid levothyroxine along with T3 liothyronine daily. I’m a very poor converter and have Hashimotos. When I added the T3 medication to my levothyroxine dose. It was a real game changer for the good. I felt so well I decided to join a gym and do some exercise 3/4 times a week. Nothing too strenuous. At first I felt great but as the days continued I found myself more tired in the evenings. I got my bloods done and spoke with my private only endocrinologist. He suggested I increase my liothyronine from taking 5mcg twice a day 8hrs apart to taking it 3 times a day. The increase worked for myself. However, when I stopped going the gym I had to titrate down again as I went over medicated. I now don’t go the gym instead a take brisk walks twice a day this helps keep my levels in a good place plus I feel fit and happy. T3 is energy so if you are using up more energy continuously then I guess you might need to increase the T3. Also check your vitamins and ensure they are all optimal.

10 mcg of T3 is on the low side. 25mcg of T3 is approx equal to 100mcg of levothyroxine.

I take 20mcg T3 with one glass of water when I awake and wait an hour before I eat.

I feel well and am symptom-free.

I follow the advice by Dr John Lowe (scientist/doctor/researcher and expert on T3) was also an Adviser to Thyroiduk before bad fall that caused his death.

He stated that the effect of one daily dose of T3 would saturate all of the T3 receptor cells and the effect could last up to three days. I trialled this myself i.e. took one dose of T3 with one glass of water and didn't eat until one hour had elapsed. I did not take T3 on day 2 or day 3 and still felt well.
