Hypo and menopause

Hi I am hypo but having gone through menopause my weight has gone up on hips and stomach no matter what I do it will not go. Question. When I asked the GP about my hormones results she said they were normal for my age NOW that's the real issue, how do I get my hormone levels back to a time where the weight is not an issue? At 63 yrs old I want to get my hormones back to a better level ?? Also what's the best thing to help restore gut health.. I currently use eastradol gel for hot sweats . Thanks in advance for any help. Ps I have factor 5 so cannot have hrt due to a DVT .

Hi Mary,

I'll ask the dummy question 🤔 I don't know what factor 5 is?... you say can't use HRT but you are using Estradiol which is HRT?

Eeyore factor 5 is a blood clotting disorder so no progesterone only the eastradol gel.

Thanks for explaining, that's new to me 🤗

I don't really understand why adding back in a little of what your body is used to and has declined is then so bad for us.. like you say you are only looking for a top up 🤷‍♀️

I thought the body identical range got over this issue?

You would think giving you out of balance top ups would be worse?

Hi Mary, not sure if factor 5 is same as V leiden but read posts of ladies on full hrt including progesterone (utrogestan) with this condition. Can I ask is it Estrogel your prescribed? If so this is hrt and is safe to use for ladies with v leiden/clot risks.

Thank you sparky and yes it's Estrogel. I can't have progesterone.

What gut issues do you have?

This link gives a few simple things that can help your gut. bbc.co.uk/food/articles/wha...

What were your latest thyroid results with ranges? For our body to work well we need to have optimal levels of thyroid hormones and key vitamins.

When hypo we get low stomach acid which means we cannot absorb vitamins well from our food, regardless of a great diet. For thyroid hormone to work well we need OPTIMAL levels of vitamins. Have you recently or could you ask your GP to test levels of ferritin, folate, B12 & D3? Private tests are available, see link for companies offering private blood tests & discount codes, some offer a blood draw service at an extra cost. thyroiduk.org/help-and-supp...

I’ve got a couple of reading tips for you.

Supergut by Dr William Davies has some very interesting belly fat related info.

Your Thyroid and how to keep it healthy by Dr Barry Durrant-Peatfield chapter 7 is enlightening and suggests how we hypos can work on our adrenals and optimise thyroid to boost our sex hormones. 🌱

mary18,

If you want your metabolism to be healthy and be what it was before, you need to give your body a reason to make more energy and that means maintaining and building muscle mass. Having more muscle mass can help reduce overall body fat. We simply don’t have the muscle mass we used to have in our teens and 20s and that’s a key factor for overall health.

It doesn’t have to be lifting weights in the gym but if you can then great. Walking, yoga, swimming, Pilates and even using body weight exercises at home. It needs to be regular and consistent.

Having healthier muscle mass increases insulin sensitivity which affects all your female, adrenal and thyroid hormones in a positive way.
