Unexpected blood test

Thought I was just going for a blood pressure check today and took thyroxine. Nurse was quite pushy about doing a blood test as well in spite of me objecting. Explained that result for thyroid would be skewed and reducing my thyroxine would make me very ill, especially as symptomatic of hypothyroidism in many ways.Previous results have been borderline overactive according to TSH so this result will be awful. Really upset and dreading results TSH is the only test done, not even T4 is tested.

Have built up something of a life since first diagnosed and can see that disappearing.

You should have just refused, they cannot do a procedure without your consent. You should have just said no, it's not convenient today, I will book for another day. Doesn't matter how pushy the nurse is you can refuse.

Nurse looked at me as though I was fiddling results. Wish I hadn't been honest but it's done now. Could request T4 test? Historically low inspire of low TSH.No chance of T3 test, also bottom of range many years ago when it was tested.

When you get your results and they try to reduce your dose, tell them that the results are skewed because you take a supplement containing biotin. If you search on google you will find no end of research papers and sites that show the effects of biotin on thyroid test results.

And please note even if you do not take something containing biotin you tell them you do!

always be ready to refuse an unexpected blood test.

Saying you are taking biotin supplement is always a good “white lie”

Looking at other posts of yours

You have low GFR and on PPI s

PPI will lower vitamin levels

Low vitamin levels results in poor conversion of Ft4 (levothyroxine) to Ft3 (active hormone)

Low Ft3 results in low GFR

I know that poor treatment of my thyroid condition has impacted other areas of my health. My GP won't act on private tests. I've asked. Tried to get referral to endocrinologist. Weight gain, high cholesterol could be due to lifestyle so very difficult to argue that it's not even with test results in black and white. Without a surveillance camera I cannot prove that my diet is healthy or at times actively trying to lose weight.Plus that I lose no weight unless on a low carb diet or cut to under 800 cals a day. I would gain weight with Slimming World. I'm not perfect but so upset by last lecture at health check, before numbers taken, that apart from monitoring kidney issues, I don't want to go again. Awful.

I cannot afford private health care.

But getting private testing will show you actual Ft4 and Ft3 results and ESSENTIAL vitamin levels once year

Thousands upon thousands of members …..the first step is to see EXACTLY what levels are

Then you know what you are dealing with

I had evidence that T3 was low and GP wouldn't act upon it. They have told me that they won't look at private blood tests and will not do them on the NHS

if they only test TSH , then taking levo on the day shouldn't make any difference to the result

Time of last dose levo affects fT4 result , not TSH result.

time of test is what affects TSH results... eg. 9 am result may be a bit higher than 1-3 pm result. and having breakfast before test may also lower TSH a bit .

What time was the test done ?

12.35. I've read that TSH might not be affected so fingers crossed. I would always delay thyroxine and go for an earlier test IF I knew it was happening.First time all medical checks have been bundled together. And for past few years TSH has been only thing tested. Prior to that T4. Even longer ago T3.

I went for an MRI which the surgeon stated that I should have contrast with to enhance the image. They refused to use the contrast, so guess what I refused the MRI, simple. You should have refused. There will always be the pushy type who wants to be in charge of everything you can be more positive and next time politely refuse.

It’s awful when you are blindsided, sounds like you have a plan. I had an unexpected HbA1c done a few weeks ago, nurse announced it’s due so I’m going to draw for this as well - which was fine and I have nothing to worry about but I was stunned and thought what would I do if that was a thyroid blood test. I’m going to try and remember the biotin excuse, which will be true. I’m a pushover when in the room, must toughen up 😆
