Hi I’m having my thyroid checked via a blood test and iron levels and a few other bits I can’t remember. My blood test is booked for the afternoon should I change this to the morning?

thank you 😀

Yes

Book early morning, ideally just before 9am if possible

Are you trying to get diagnosed as hypothyroid or already on levothyroxine?

If on levothyroxine already…….Last dose levothyroxine 24 hours before test

For full Thyroid evaluation you need TSH, FT4 and FT3 tested

Also both TPO and TG thyroid antibodies tested at least once for autoimmune thyroid disease

Very important to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 at least once year minimum

Far too frequently NHS only tests TSH

Hi thanks for your reply, it’s to see if I have it, I had some home tests done and it’s shown abnormal blood results. They were not for thyroid issues it was more for my hormones. Which could be down to thyroid B12 my liver etc but I have my liver checked due to being on immune suppressants, I have had B12 troubles in the past so believe it could be B12 or thyroid but more thyroid as symptoms fit more.

are you currently taking any vitamin supplements

Stop taking any supplements that contain biotin 3-7 days before any blood tests as biotin may falsely affect test results

come back with new post once you get results

We are frequently not told by the person booking blood tests that iron tests should be done after a 12 hour fast, so it makes sense that an early morning test would be more convenient than the patient having to go all day with no food.

an iron blood test (used to diagnose conditions such as iron deficiency anaemia) – you may be asked to fast for 12 hours before the test
