Hi, I have itchy eyes on and off and wondered if it was to do with my thyroid or maybe an allergy.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Hello Suetatt :

Yes itchy eyes could well be thyroid elated.

There are TED - Thyroid Eye Disease - clinics and if you contact the TED charity - tedct.org.uk they will be abl to give you further information :

Please ensure that whatever drops, sprays, lotions and potions, and overnight gunky grease you use - that they are all Preservative Free - even those prescribed :

Most doctors would dismiss any connection to thyroid & many Doctor state TED is specifically related to hyper & TRab positive.    This is not accurate.

I have hyper but not autoimmune & have a long history of non medical help with my eyes.

If they are itchy it’s is more likely to be allergy related & from everything I’ve read being hypothyroid will exacerbate any allergy symptom.  Have you tried anti-histamine?   Chemist could likely recommend eye drop for relief.

If the eyes are irritated (gritty / dry) or red.  If they appearance of eye is different eg bulging then you need to press to see a specialist (ophthalmologist).

I found high street options offer best and advise & have the equipment to carry out proper checks if necessary.  They can write a letter for GP to arrange specialist.

Thanks for the advice.

My nephew is an optometrist so I’ll ask him to have a look at my eyes.

I have been diagnosed with dry eye syndrome as I was referred to local eye hospital .

For me it’s been for some 3/4 years. Afraid I didn’t find much help with hot/compresses , drops snd night gel. The relief was ok but short lived .

I have recently increased my T3 slightly for the last 3 weeks , and lo and behold, I have found the most improvement to them . After testing I might try another small increase .

doubt if the docs will accept it was t3 that improved them!!
