I had a similar test result and was told it could be due to inflammation within the body, not just iron

Thyroid36,

Ferritin is a storage for iron but also an inflammation marker, eg it increases in the presence of inflammatory proteins and WBC’s. (Inflammation can be cell damage/oxidative stress/autoimmune conditions, and not just having a cold or a cut finger).

If we are ill it is wholly inadequate to test only ferritin when assessing iron levels as possible to be anaemic with elevated ferritin. If your Dad is symptomatic he should ask his GP for a full iron panel. He could do with having folate and Vit D tested as well if these haven't been tested recently.

Likewise testing only TSH & FT4 is inadequate to assess full thyroid hormone levels. Unfortunately GP’s rarely test FT3, so members conduct private tests and post results here for other members comment.

Radd, what about hemochromatosis? Very popular in the British Isles especially Ireland.

gabkad,

Yes, I have it! 😳😁

It’s impossible to tell what true iron levels are without an iron panel.

If it turns out that your father has no medical issues, giving blood is a very effective way of getting your ferritin levels down. I give blood every 4 months and my ferritin is now 13! Not a serious suggestion, just saying.🙂

thank you yes I read this so I think this could be good for him, because on his blood work everything looks good and within a good range just his vitamin D is seriously low and again low vitamin D and high ferritin are connected. Thank you for this advice

Thyroid36,

Venesection/donation can’t be done without checking haemoglobin levels. As said it is possible to have anaemia with elevated ferritin.

yes 💯 , I have said to him go have a full

Iron blood panel as well as can be low iron. Thank you so much for your advice 🙏

Thyroid36,

If you exploring the high ferritin and possible venesection he will need a full iron panel and FBC that includes labs for RBC’s and haemoglobin.

Ok thank you, I will tell him to make sure he gets all those done 🙏

ah thank you for your reply! His B12 is on the low end as well which I also agree is connected. It’s crazy how vitamin deficiency is so important and has massive consequences when you’re deficient.
