Hypo thyroid and estrogen

Vickisophieunicorn profile image

Hi

I was wondering if under active thyroid function can cause estrogen to be low?

From what iv read it is normally the opposite but I have suffered low estrogen for 2 years and started T3 and my estrogen has increased.

Iv started my T3 but iv also been working on my gut and cleansing my liver / gallbladder/ removing candida /heavy metals etc.

Iv also been doing this for years too though so I'm abit confused (happy confused haha). I just wondered what actually helped it.

Any insight appreciated

Thanks

Vickisophieunicorn,

All hormones are interconnected but not all connections are direct and thyroid hormones aren’t usually thought of as directly influencing oestrogen levels any more than the other sex hormones. Generally oestrogen is seen as high as progesterone naturally decreases first.

Age is a big determination of oestrogen levels too, and many are too low later in life due to compromised adrenal reserve that should naturally replace ovarian decline (peri-menopause/menopause). Causes when you are younger could be anything to do with ovarian, pituitary or thyroid hormone insufficiencies, or even life style choices such as eating disorders, etc.

Optimising thyroid hormone levels and getting them working effectively with supporting iron and nutrients will help all hormones rebalance. It's good your levels are righting themselves. We have oestrogen receptors all over the body as its vital for good health, fertility, bones, brains, etc.

Thanks for this

Yes I have had hypopituitarism for some time, then started thyriod meds alongside trying to sort out my liver / kidneys / gallbladder (giving them a good detox really) and all of a sudden out of know where my pituatry started to kick in.

Iv been on low dose T3 from November but it's never really changed my hormones but now all of a sudden my estrogen is high (not concerned just slightly high but as I don't ovulate yet then I don't know my cycle).

I just sat in the doctors crying as iv been on all HRT etc for last 14* months where my mental health went crazy !

Then my endo (fertility one not Thyroid one) said just stop everything and give your body a rest which i did. I have been on AIP diet for 7 years for other gut issues which my endo believes was hiding a long standing Thyroid issue.

I think this alongside diet and my thyroid meds just kicked things off again in my pituatry.

I am just in shock and now I'm panicking as I don't know which one caused my pituatry to just start working again. Typical!!! But Ill not.

I am on 30mcg of T3 daily (don't convert well) and was hoping id feel better but I still feel awful so don't think iv got my levels up yet plus my ferratin is nowhere near high enough (addressing this but it's hard due to bowel issue and malabsorption). Hoping eating offal and taking offal pills will address this abit better.

Thanks for your reply

Vicki,

If you have a fertility endo, you should be being monitored but be aware any oestrogen rise risks increasing thyroxine binding globulin and your thyroid med dose might need increasing. Especially if you are ttc. Good luck 🤞

OkiYes I am. Every 3 months plus my thyroid endo has my bloods done every month while I find my T3 butterzone.

Funny how my endo fertility doctor knows nothing about my thyroid. Shes just like... I'm gonna ignore all this and focus on estrogen etc. But they all work together so I have been so confused!

Wow, you're having a ride!... I was just going to suggest Heme iron if you haven't tried it as it's much kinder on the stomach and easier to absorb, I shied away from offal as it contains heavy metals etc..?🤗

Thanks!

Yes every iron under the sun tried over 10 years one of those long standing problems.

If you buy organic pasture raised offal the heavy metals are minimal. I also take hunter gather offal kidney pills which have been life changing for b12 absorption. I dont absorb any vitamins from supplements due to fillers even the sprays so I recon this is a better way to get vitamins rather than having nothing. Someday I'll hopefully be able to take vitamins once I heal my leaky gut but apart from ferratin by vitamins aren't too bad.

Thanks, yes an awful journey, 5 bowel surgeries (including losing a quarter of my large bowel)and numerous health issues one after another and I'm finally hopefully getting to the end. Most of them due to poor health care tbh! All prob could of been avoided if I had not of been young naive and uneducated at the time. One problem leading to another to another due to pure neglect tbh.

But hey that's life. Onward and upwards hopefully.

Thanks for the advise 😊😊

Keep strong, sounds like you are getting there 🤗

I'm using threearrowsnutra.com/en-uk/... (terrible American site but great product)

and a stash of Thorne Basic B

I did look into Hunter & Gather.... but was undecided... perhaps I shall revisit
