How long does it take for np thyroid to level out? I’m on day 4 and tonight I cried nonstop. I felt out of control with my emotions. Is this normal?

NP thyroid medicine- how long?
Hello TOHcamp:
NP thyroid is a brand of Natural Desiccated Thyroid and a very different treatment option to the T4 monotherapy you were taking 6 months ago - why and when did you change treatment options.
No thyroid hormone replacement works well until ferritin, folate, B12 and vitamin D are up and maintained at optimal levels - have you had these all run recently ?
The T4 takes around 6-8 weeks to fully leave the body and so you start off NP thyroid very slowly and as T4 diminishes in your system you slowly increase, weekly, in quarter - 1/4 - grain/tablets the NP thyroid.
Any thyroid hormone replacement takes time to work -
first base is simply getting the vitamins and minerals to good levels and then slow and steady increases are suggested - though with NDT it's more about how you are feeling than what a blood test may say.
What have you been diagnosed with and have you had your thyroid antibodies run and know if you are dealing with a thyroid auto immune disease ?
ferritin, folate, B12 and vitamin D are all in the normal range. My thyroid showed hypothyroidism this summer. Prescribed levothyroxine 25 . It gave me diarrhea and nausea. I got off after a week. I got tests again later and my TSH was normal but my T3 was low. I tried other homeopathic vitamins that worked for awhile but then I began to feel bad again. So they put me in 15 NP thyroid to see it I could handle it better. I get nauseous after I eat sometimes. I felt ok until yesterday when I couldn’t focus very well and then cried all night. I was so sad. Very unusual for me. I have anxiety taking the NP Thyroid now.
Hello 😊 Sorry you are feeling so rubbish! Myself and some other members here noticed the same thing and for us it has been cortisol. So long as vitamins and slowly increasing have been ruled out it might be worth testing your cortisol to see if that's why you are not tolerating the medication very well. Good luck to you!

ferritin, folate, B12 and vitamin D are all in the normal range
Just to say that being "in the normal range" doesn't mean that your levels are optimal and we need optimal levels for any thyroid hormone to work properly. Are yours at these levels:
Vit D: 100-150nmol/L (40-60ng/ml) which is the level recommended by the Vit D Council, Vit D Society and Grassroots Health, with a recent blog post on Grassroots Health recommending at least 125nmol/L (50ng/ml).
B12: top of range for Total B12, if Active B12 measured then 100 plus.
Folate: at least half way through range.
Ferritin: some experts say the optimal level for thyroid function is 90-110ug/L, and we also need to see if there is any inflammation (test an inflammation marker such as CRP) to ensure ferritin isn't falsely raised due to inflammation.
I'm afraid normal is an opinion - and we need to deal in facts :
Please post your results and ranges for the vitamins and minerals ;
1 grain NP thyroid is I believe 60 mg and contains 9 mcg T3 + 38 mcg T4 :
So 15mg NP thyroid is just 2.25 T3 + 9 mcg T4 :
and likely less potent than 25 mcg T4 which is just a starter dose and when on T4 monotherapy you need to stay on the T4 and should be checked and dose adjusted every 6-8 weeks as the T4 builds up in your body and hopefully, your symptoms are relieved.
What were your Free T3 and Free T4 results and ranges when this low T3 result was found and prompted this switch to NP thyroid ?
