Hair thyroid

Just a further update. The amount of hairloss has continued to be lower. Growth is noticeable but not tonnes of it. The hair strands that are in my scalp feel tighter to the head, they don't pull out easily. When my thyroids off the strands pull out with a simple touch. Have yet to retest my bloods to see where they are at. But hair loss as a symptom is improved, so on that alone I'm glad.

Has anyone out there had noticeable regrowth?

I can say for sure now my hair responds in terms of slowed loss with levo treatment. But the mass regrowth to replace the mass loss has yet to take place. I'm wondering if it doesn't? There is some regrowth now more than was noticeable during all that horrendous recent loss

My hair loss was dreadful last year but my doctor tested my Ferritin levels and they were very low, well below the bottom of the range. As soon as I started to eat pate regularly the hair loss stopped. Instead of having a brushful of hair every day I don't have to clear the brush more than once a month.

That's impressive. I'm putting pate on my shopping list now 😊

I've just noticed a funny thing... we eat paté and a pate is what I thought a bald head was called, a bald pate. I've had to look it up and surprisingly it was harder to find than I expected

All I can add is that my hair is super thin now and Im on synthroid, but have been for about 20 years...It seem to get more thin after menopause...also for a little while i was over medicated...Not sure which thing did this to my hair? My Moms hair was pretty thin as she got older and she wore wigs, but she didnt have a thyroid issue...I have resorted to perms for volume...it helps a bit...and i use really good stuff on my hair and i take extra vitamins for hair..

Did your strands become really fine? It's depressing to hear no stories of hair actually regrowing the same from this rotten disease

Hi!

Well Ive always had fine hair, but I use to have tons of hair...Now my pony tail is about as big as 1 finger wide...super sad about this :(

Hearing this makes me feel super sad and super depressed.

My hair strands were so thick I could literally peel them when they had split ends. Now the strands are thinner than one of those split ends.

There are treatments that might help at salons...like keratin treatments..Ive not tried them yet, but thinking on it and exploring...Also Im using a system called "Olaplex"...which is shampoo, conditioner and hair mask and other stuff...its a bit costly, but get from your salon or hairdresser you go to...It seems to help a bit...I find leave in conditioners better than wash out conditioners too...(a good one from salon)...like maybe "Redken" product...Im in BC Canada and i use a brand called "Fast Food" by AG...I just use about a big round coin size....

yep I’ve gone from a plug hole full daily in the shower to nothing. Hair is super thick. Has never been this thick my whole life!

My ferritin is still work in progress (fibroids) but folate B12 and biotin in B complex and D all higher was taking High Selenium but have cut that to low now.

Nails like talons too, had to trim my toenails twice recently, I used to do it once a year🤣

hope yours continues to improve, love this forum 💕

Did your strands become really thin during this? How long were u shedding for? How off was your thyroid.

I assume you feel the vitamins are why your hair improved and not thyroid med?

yes it was like baby hairs returning in my scalp and it went quite itchy for a while too.

I can’t pinpoint if it’s vits or Levo but perhaps the combination of all systems improving 🤷🏽‍♀️

Hope that helps 🌱

I've had problems with my hair for years - excessive shedding and weak, and the addition of T3 made no difference to it. However a few months ago I started to notice that when I washed my hair, there was only a small amount of hair in the brush. When I combed it once dry, there was no loss at all. Then I started to notice a lot of short hair growing - I suppose it varies now to between about an inch and a couple of inches. I keep expecting it all to deteriorate again but it hasn't. I have only changed two things. In October last year I changed to a seaweed based shampoo and conditioner. The other thing I started in, I think September or October, was firstly having apple cider vinegar and then, because I hated that, 2 tablets of Betaine Hydrochloride with Pepsin daily with food due to very painful bloating. I'm wondering if the tablets are enabling me to absorb my food properly? I don't know. I do know that I still find it hard to believe!

Hi,

I have been reading your previous posts. My hair strands have also gone from very thick/wavy to very thin/straight over the last 5 year. Lots of shedding. My TSH has been fluctuating. Things that also suddenly happened was daily tinnitus, and teeth clenching while sleeping. Sometimes I get a rash around my nose sides and forehead.

The right lower side of my stomach aches daily and rumbles frequently. When you were suffering from h-pylori did you experience something similar?

Have you had your pituitary gland checked due to high prolactin? Have you had SHBG, DHEA, testosterone and other hormones checked?

The prolactin has dropped back down to normal now. Think the high thyroid poorly treated was reason for it. No other explanation. It was a one off increase from what can see. Other hormones testosterone etc okay

With the hpylori. I had this constant pain in my left side. Not stomach aches they are different. I would class stomach aches as if you were going to be sick. This was just pain in my left side kept me awake at night. Dr wasn't interested. I dont know how I was able to self diagnose that it might be that prob with alot of research as that's all I have done since hair fell out.

Anyway got the poo test from Medi checks and that's what it was. GP reluctantly did the breath test. Wasn't listening to me before and came back and said I had it.

Been fine ever since got the anitbiotics for it.

What is your thyroid like? What about your other body hair eyebrows arms leg etc?

I've never had tinnitus or teeth clenchin

My TSH has been fluctuating from over 6 mU/L down to a little over 2 mU/L. My T4(free) has been around 16-18 pmol/L and T3(total) was high out of range at 3.6 nmol/L. Over the past year my T3 has dropped and my shedding seems to be reduced. I suspect that high T3 may have played a part in the excessive hair shedding.

Body hair is ok, not shedding. Eyebrows have also thinned, but biotin helps them regrow, at least in my case.

When you say your other hormones are ok, have you made sure that the hair loss is not androgen related?

Yes. And I'm the only female in family to suffer from it. Mummy and her sister have no thyroid issues either
