Pregnancy / Hypothyroidism

Hi there,

I will finally see an NHS endocrinologist at 20 weeks. Ahead of that appointment my NHS obstetrician has asked me to test my THS and T4.

Is it worth me paying privately for a full Thyroid panel ahead of the appointment instead? (THS, T4, T3, Reverse T3 and TPO).

If so, could you please tell me why as I found this all very confusing. (I need to be armed with the right information ahead of my appointment, ie understand myself why a Full Thyroid Panel in pregnancy with hypothyroidism is vital?).

If I do a private Full Thyroid Panel, is my NHS endocrinologist unlikely to want to consider and want to work with those results?

Many thanks,

Jenny

Definitely test full thyroid and vitamin levels yourself BEFORE consultation

Otherwise appointment is waste of time

Essential to test thyroid levels early morning and last dose levothyroxine 24 hours before test

Remember to stop taking any vitamin supplements that contain biotin 3-5 days before blood test as biotin can falsely affect test results

Thanks for all this!

Why is it so important in pregnancy to have the full panel (rather than THS and T4)? What will the other thyroid values tell us?

And is an NHS likely to want to work with a full panel in pregnancy?

Thanks again,

Jenny

most important result is always Ft3

For good conversion of Ft4 (levothyroxine) to Ft3 (active hormone) we need GOOD vitamin levels

Obviously baby also needs good vitamin levels too

NSH should test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 at least once a year for all thyroid patients….but rarely does

Hence over 129,000 members on here

presumably you have been taking pregnancy vitamin supplements

Not what you're looking for?
